I download music from you tube and transfer to USB sticks to play in the car.
I recently purchased a new one and the transfer if fine on the computer but will not play in the car.
I have formatted it to fat32 but to no avail.
Has anyone any suggestions?

A USB normally comes pre-formatted at FAT32. Why did you re-format it?

Did you do it as a quick format? If so, try it as a low level format.

Do the files play on other devices?

effsie was responding to my question and yes I have asked the same thing on another forum but the answers were only partly successful.
I did it on a low level format and yes they do play on other devices, only not in the car

And other USBs play in the car?

The easy answer is to use a different USB, or maybe try formatting as exFAT or NTFS.

It could be as simple as some much in the car unit and/or muck in the USB that are stopping it making proper contact.

If none of that works, take it back and exchange it and see how you get on.

yes i have 5 usbs and only one will play in the car.
I have tried downloading from the one that works to the others but only 2 tracks will play.
leads me to think that you tube downloads may be corrupted in some way.
Doe's anyone know of an alternative torrent site?

If it is digital then, generally, it either works or it doesn't.

If, as you say, only 1 out of 5 works, then it points towards the unit in the car being the problem.

If they are audio files, they should ideally be MP3 not MP4. MP4 files are predominantly video files.

Try downloading them as MP3 files and see what happens.

Not sure who you use to download the files, but I always use https://ytmp3.cc/ for MP3 files.

Did you upgrade your headunit or/and USB as it sounds similar to a problem i encountered just recently - It seems dependent on manufacturer and features as some do not support playback of Mp4 - i recently purchased a Pioneer head unit that does not have the facility to playback MP4 - but plays MP3 & WMA without problem.
Good Luck

You have potentially two issues - one is when you formatted the USB, your PC only saw certain partitions based upon your PC system, it has only recognised your PC default in which case you can try to reformat your USB to either FAT32 or NTFS (if not already done so).

The other problem could be your car head system, it depends on how old the car stereo system is, if it is an old system it will not recognise the newly formatted USB in which case you may have to reset the input output on your cars stereo.

Failing that the other way is to buy a cheap external hard drive and download all your music onto that and try to play it through that, do not format the new hard drive leave it as factory formatted also when you download use windows file transfer it is quicker.

If all that does not work replace the car stereo, it will recognise the USB that you are trying to use as the firm ware (software) is new and up to date.

Good luck

Y'know, i always thought I had a pretty good command of the English language - O levels and A levels in language and literature. Clearly not. Couldn't understand a flipping word of the previous post!!!

I'll never get involved with USBs for the car or fat32s, would probably disable the whole damn car!!! A good old fashioned radio us all I need!!

OMG! I'm showing my age

A USB, like a computer disk, needs to be formatted so that computers or devices such as car stereos can read the information that is on them.

Most things come pre-formatted with an old format called FAT32. This has been around for many years and has the benefit that almost anything can read them. The downside is that it was created in the days of small files and cannot cope with big ones.

There are two other formats that can deal with big files, these are called exFAT and NTFS.

Not sure why the previous poster suggested that he reformats the USB as FAT32 as it already is formatted with it.
