Hello all, This place seems highly recommended and I'm partial to a good souvla but it definitely cannot be reached in a small rental car no? |

Drive carefully and you should manage it, unless you have a car full of overweight passengers. |

When you rent a car here they tell you not to take it "off road" and as the whole of the Akamas where the Last Castle is situated is "off road" then you do so at your peril and considerable expense if you break down or damage the vehicle. Lots do but it is not something I would recommend regardless of what others tell you.Even a 4x4 rental is not supposed to go off road but at least you stand a better chance of getting away with damaging it on the rutted tracks that pass as the roads. Lots of places do a better Souvla but what you pay for at the LC is the stunning scenery and the view. |

we took our Tourists to the Lara turtle beach last Thursday via the road down the gorge. The road grader has worked very hard there and along the Akamas coast. It is as smooth as I have ever seen it. There were lots of red plates at Lara and jamming up the road, mainly because while they have to creep around at 10kph, we are quite happy at 40kmp in our double cab on the smoothed out dirt roads. Honestly I prefer the winter on Akamas when the road is just too bad for saloon cars. So keep tourists off Akamas, on the days I am going anyway. Nimby PD |

Just go the last Castle this time - tis a tourist must, but book a table first. Although it is on the Akamas technically, the dirt road is in very good condition and you would make it easily in a Reliant Robin 3 wheeler. It is only about 1/2 Km of good dirt road from the surfaced road. Don't worry the hire car companies don't mind if you just go to the last castle and no further. There is 10 or 15 hire cars in the car park every day, I have never seen or heard of any saloon car in trouble getting there or back. |

Thanks If you like boats you could book a trip on the Koulla out of Latchi. It leaves in the morning around 10 ish, takes you to the Blue Lagoon where you can swim from the boat and to the beach while the captain is cooking Souvla and chicken on the BBQ at the rear of the boat.It is served with salad and pitta bread and rough white or red wine and is just great. It returns about 2.30 pm and the cost is very good.I think it is 25e per adult and 15e for children, less if you don't have the food but to me it is the best bit after the swimming. All around the Latchi sea front are places doing Souvla and they are mostly quite good. The Last Castle is lovely and if they say the road has been improved a bit this year then risk it if you want.A lot do but you will be charged if you either break down or do damage the sump etc. |

Well said Beverley - a lot of hire vehicles go but they are going against the restricions on off road" driving. I know PD disagrees - I go there with a friend in a 4 wheel drive and the road to the Last Castle shakes the car violently - or am I going to the wrong "Last Castle" - PD? John |
