This deal sounds a little dodgy to me, why would his club let him go to a club who payed less for him unless something else was afoot :? :?

Tottenham Hotspur’s success in agreeing to sign Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer, has sparked off disbelief among the Croatian sources who maintain that the highly-rated midfielder wanted to go to Newcastle United and how did the club agree with Spurs for less money than that offered by the Toon.

According to a report in Sunday Sun, Spurs have paid Dinamo £16.6 million while the Toon had seen their bid of around £20 million fail.

Luka really wanted to go to Newcastle, but they would not pay more,” a source in Zagreb is reported as saying.

“Dinamo asked for £25 million and also Modric wanted a little more money in wages – but not much more.

“So it is strange that the transfer with Tottenham would be agreed for much less money.”

so your reporting on a story in the sunday sun, which should be called 'newcastle fables', it is nearly as bad as the evening gazette in boro for its made up stories.

and then you miss out the part of the article that indicates the fee may be nearer to 25m rather than 16m, anyway, lets see newcastle compared to spurs, for a foreigner it is a no brainer european football next season, world respected manager and as far as a lot people outside of the uk, london is england sadly (which makes it even harder for the north east teams to sign anyone and keegan admits this)

from the same paper, boro after brazil star menegazzo (no i have never heard of him either) capped 8 times apparently
and also boro's coupet bid gets a boost (now he is a good keeper, but like hell will boro be after a 35 year old keeper)

this paper is fairytale stuff, once in a while they will get a correct story more by luck than anything else, if you pick enough names one will be correct

If you read the post properly, you'll see I included the link to the full article & you're deluded if you think the Sunday Sun tabloid writes anything good about the NE clubs unless its dodgy

As for tablois in general, I'm more likely to believe you & DP before I believe anything written in them but it does say that Modric wanted to come to the TOON but is now at the Spurts, just goes to show money is always the motivator in these matters

As for bringing big name players to the NE, we'll have to wait & see what the summer market brings

Bottom line is, he came to Newcastle and had a look around, then he went to Tottenham and had a look around and obviosly liked our package better than yours.

Given the fact he will be playing in Europe and, in his foreign eyes, is likely to have a better standard of living in London you can understand why he chose us over the Toon. As a born and bred Geordie I love the area and think it is the best place on earth to live, however to the uninitiated I can see why they may have a different opinion, this is always going to be a problem for the Northern Clubs. Sad but that is the case.

Once in a while a NE team will manage to find someone big, get them signed and paraded in front of the fans before the more glamourous clubs realise, the Boro were very good at that a few years back with Ravenelli, Juniniho etc. Now however whenever any English club shows and interest their advisors make it known so they can see what other teams may be interested or to bump the fees up.

KKK will struggle this year to bring any really big names to the Toon, especially with the lack of European football. It may be better if he lowered his sights a bit and went for players who still have to reach their peak rather than try for the established stars.

Pete I know you will respond saying what about Michael Owen. I accept he was a big name, but at the time he was leaving Real no other English club showed an interest in him. You cannot honestly tell me if Liverpool or Man Utd had tried to sign him he would still have chosen the Toon.

Regards.

John

Owen made it known he wanted to go back to Liverpool. He was waiting for them to come in and Owen was bitterly disappointed when they didn't and his only option was to sign for the skunks.

Sorry John, but I have nothing to say about Owen, as at the time, I thought it was wasted money & up till about 3 months ago, I was under the same opinion until KK came back & Owen has changed his role too more of a support striker instead of the man everyone tries to give the ball too & he seems to be making a good job of it, so after 6 from 6 will he decide to stay on at the TOON or move because he's now free from injury & may have suitors like Erikson wanting to take him away from us but we'll have to wait & see what happens :D
