Might be a good idea to check the date today!!!!!

Hope it's true, but likely to be an April Fool's Joke - someone is a right Txxt!!!

Mind you Sky Sports have just done a big profile of him and it is on all the channels. If true Rob Lee to becpme assistant

I'm still thinking it may be an April fool joke. Just because it's on lots of websites doesn't mean it's not a joke. You just need 1 big site like Sky sports to publish it and everyone will copy.

There is nothing on the official site (yet). I know they can be slow sometimes. Still worried it may be a trick. And a lot of the articles are saying NO official announcement yet, but it'll be this morning sometime. Guess we'll know for sure in time.

No way it's an April Fool - Shearer himself wouldn't sit back and allow a trick like that to be played on the Geordie nation.

My respect for the man has gone through the roof for taking on the challenge at a time like this - it's reminiscent of Keegan's rescue job back in 92 - what odds a late decisive winner in the home game against Pompey?? Who will be the new David Kelly?

Rob Lee back as well - Beardo already here - the dream team is assembling!

Shearer's probably only just getting out of bed! Or should I say there's a good chance that he doesn't how far this has gone, if it's a rumour, as it's only 9:20am UK time. And if does know about the "rumour" he won't of had much chance to get around to denying it.

If it's true - I think he's completely mad taking the job. Only 8 games left and can't change the players etc. Plus I thought he didn't like Ashley to start with even before Keegan thing.

The announcement on Sky and BBC was @ 11.00 UK time 01:00 your time, so it might be an SApril Fool in Cyprus, but not UK!!!

Alison King Kev was brought in for only 8 games back in 1991/1992 and saved us from thethen Division 3, so don't bet against it!

What an atmosphere there will be on Saturday!!!

PS Captain Fantastic I still love you!

Good to see you keeping the faith Roger! The parallels with the Keegan appointment are quite striking....

Here's an inspirational video to help sway the doubters:

I said I was waiting for the official announcement. Which always a good idea.
I've not lost the faith. I was still feeling that we would stay up before any of this happen. I was a lot more optimistic than Martin last time we spoken. We have a lot of 6 point games coming up.

Not post on 1st April doesn't mean anything. In the past, I've seen quite a few April fools posted before 1st April. In fact I know of 1 website that post them sometimes weeks in advance to set up the big reveal on the day.

Formal announcement made - he is the New Manager until the end of the Season at least.

Let's hope he puts some spirit into this rabble we currently have and get us through this Season by staying up. Then who knows another "Keegan" type revolution???

Should be a fantastic atmosphere on saturday!

 I'll try, but I'm not sure if he'll go for it!

How long you over for this time? We've got Spurs away on the 19th, then the big Pompey game on the 27th - you around for both of them?

You trying to say my credit with Marios is not good? Over until end of May, then back home for some business, then out July for rest of year

My sister flys out on the 19th arriving at 15:05, so may miss the start of the spurs match!

She should really now better (however she booked ages ago, probably before the time and date was set)

Can someone please point to a website that shows the official statement then? Thanks

I just don't think he's a giving credit type of chap! As you're over soon anyway, you can wait and get a round in then (hopefully of a match-winning celebratory nature!)

Latest on Sky Sports News is Iain Dowie coming in as assistant - interesting choice, very good coach apparently...

Will be very interested to see what sort of team selection they come up with for Saturday - will we see the return of KK's 4-3-3 that saved us last year??

Alison,

No official statement yet but Shearer's Assistant Manager is to be Ian Dowie ex-QPR Manager. I thought it would have been Rob lee, but i am sure there will be a place for Rob somewhere.

Try the NUFC site later today.

Well it's all official now, and as an extra special bonus surprise Dennis Wise has been booted out as well! :celebrate

The talk is still of an 8 game stint only, but all the signs point towards Shearer staying longer term....

Newcastle United Supporters Club (the Breakaway one set up after Keegan resigned and who have been orchestrating the protests since) have announced a "Truce" with the club and they have called for tomorrow to be an "Al-together Day" (get it "Al"?). A number of celebrations will be taking place throughout the Toon before and at kick off and hopefully a bigger celebration after the game!!! Whatever the score it is going to be a very exciting day! I will be thinking of you all in the George and Dragon before the game and I will be at the Cumberland Arms in Tynemouth - I'll get you all a pint in at the Cumberland but may have to drink them myself if you can't turn up!

Captain Fantastic - please tell Jo and Helen we will be over on the 18th and look forward to seeing them and you and the boys and girls of course.

TOON ARMY, TOON ARMY, TOON ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Roger you seem to be getting a tad excited.....why ?
I could have sworn I read that you had just retired, surely not.
You are a fine example of why the rest of the country laugh at your club.
Will you be there tomorrow ?
Of course you will.
And you will be challenging for the title next season.

Discopants you really are a sad Mackem aren't you? Always ready to have a pop at the Toon. Never mind the way your lot are going the third relegation place is all yours. jaelousy springs to mins - the Mackems always in the shadow of the Toon.

I will enjoy today no matter what the result is. Hope you do too!

 Don't worry Gary, you're not the only mackem that's getting a bit twitchy now the 3rd relegation spot isn't quite so nailed on (I was resigned to the fact we were as good as down under Hughton/JFK)

For what it's worth I can't see you lot going down - I think WBA and Boro are gone and the final spot is between us, Hull, Stoke & Blackburn.

Martin, you obviously haven't seen us play recently. I said 5 weeks ago that the third spot was between us and you and if I am honest I think it will be us.
The last home again against Wigan was one of the worst performances I've seen ever from my team and I've seen some bad uns.
I thought you'd pip us without shearer. You certainly will now.
I am resigned to going down( a bit like you were)
and Yes I did bite at the toon toon garbage spouted by your friend.

Yes if you like Rodger the Dodger.
Why wait ?
Mind I could meet you in about 30 minutes at the back of the Leazes end, that's if you know where Sid James Park is.
If, as I suspect, you don't. travel along the western by pass and you will see a lopsided carbunkle overshadowing the Haymarket.
I can be there whenever you like.

Can you two not just get a room?? :doh

Back on topic, disappointing but not exactly unexpected start to the Shearer reign this weekend - we desperately need to get Taylor and Bassong fit asap so he can take Coloccini out of the firing line, I dread to think what Stoke's rugby tactics would do to the lad....

I really didn't think the mackems were in such deep trouble, but results this weekend went against both of us, and with Man Utd up next they could be down there with us for a while yet....our next 2 games are Stoke and Spurs away - I honestly don't expect more than a point.

No offence intended, they're doing what they need to do to stay up, and pretty effectively too. I wish our shower of overpaid mercenaries had half the fight and commitment about them. :(

I expect no better than a draw on Saturday, and you'll most likely beat us.

It's certainly looking that way. :(

On a slightly more optimistic note, the noises coming out of SJP now seem to suggest Shearer may be willing to stay whatever happens, so at least bouncing back next season may be a decent possiblity....
