Apparently there is a new set top box for UK tv that connects to the internet has a "Chrome" browser and is all singing all dancing just available from August/September 2012.
It has preloaded BBC iPlayer Wi-Fi "N" and other apps?
Does anyone have any info on this box e.g. it has a HDMI connection and an ethernet connection amonst others, is it possible to get a lead that will connect this box to a ten year old Sony that has scart and s-video.
All this is part of extracting myself from the iniquitous Cyta who are not providing a good service.
I will possibly be getting a Primetel 8Mgb internet line to run this, if they can be bothered to reply to my questions.

I think that you may be talking of the box being produced by Alan Sugar and is of no use outside of the UK.

do you know how this box works?

Unless I have missed something, is it designed to allow internet tv on your android phone (eg tv stream from filmon.tv) to be sent to your tv screen, so you can watch a bigger picture. Does the box do any more than this?

I have loaded the filmon.tv app onto my android phone and the picture quality is OK for the small screen size. I have also loaded filmon onto my 15.6" laptop and the SD picture quality is very disappointing. I dont know how much better the paid for HD service would be, I might try it out for a month to see, but I would be very surprised if the picture quality was acceptable on a tv over 32".

I would be grateful for any feedback from anyone who has experience of using filmon SD or HD on a largish tv - or any better way of getting UK tv.

I have also looked at Primetel but it seems to me that their broadband/phone offering of 8MGB for 39 euro a month is based on having a landline, and is not mobile internet, so you would have to pay extra each month on top of this to get mobile internet on your android. I am confused with Primetel's pricing policy, unless it is a special offer, their website offers 8MGB broadband, phone and mobile package (including free HTC phone) for only 33 euro a month. Is there a catch here somewhere?

Hi Kev, Don't know about requiring another box but my Galaxy S2 with a 'Film on' free 'App' will receive all or most of UK BBC & ITV via Wi-Fi from my house router, with a £12.95 cable from:-

I have a so-easy sim card but that isn't used to receive wi-fi!!! ( I moved over to Primetel last week and I am in a strong area and getting the up to 8 kb and over ) with there 20 Euro for 6 month then 40 Euro recent offer with free router and installation

Also bought a Apple TV black box fro SOS Computers and this does the same job via operates from ipod 4th generation.

I still pay a sub to SKY and receive most channels except BBC & ITV !!!

I think I'll get one of those cables to connect to my HTC desire. Sounds like a good solution.

Can you tell me what the size of your satellite dish is and what decent non-subscription channels you can get?

Hi Kev, I have a 2.7 meter Dish, can't advise you regards non subscription channels, I have had a subscription for last 20 years or so since Sky started in UK, brought my card and box with me 9 years ago when I came to Cyprus. I upgraded to HD a couple of years ago. (Sky card wise I 'live' with my son in Beverley UK and subs are paid by UK bank DD)

Maybe another member might be along to give you some info!!! regards non subscription channels available since the Sat's were switched last April /March time when we 'lost' BBC & ITV !!!!

I imagine you are also getting most of these with a Sky HD receiver (plus also the subscription channels that you are paying for)?

When you say that the BBC channels have gone, do you mean all of them (i.e. BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC1 HD, BBC HD)? Which of the ITV channels can you still get?

What about the other channels on this list?

Hi Kev, Yep, All the BBC & ITV channels are not now available here in Cyprus via SKY card with the 'footprint' of the new satellite just covering UK & down to Spain I believe.

Only Channel 5 HD available on 171, All Sky sports are available 24/7 but some channels seem to be affected by 'time of day'
Can easily get all Sky progs from SKY 1 upwards

Looked up that cable you suggested but it doesnt work with my phone (HTC Desire HD), but there is a wireless solution for me, an HTC set top box which plugs into the HDMI input of tv and receives signals wirelessly from my phone. Neat solution, but cost is £43.95 ... but I dont know know how many other boxes I might end up needing to get UK tv!

Do you know if there is an appreciable difference in picture quality between FilmOn SD (free) and FilmOn HD (at £14.95 a month)? I would hope that there was. But as I've never paid for tv in my life in the UK I would be reluctant to do so in Cyprus, unless the picture quality of free tv was so poor.

I might be asking too much, but is it possible to get tv sound which is good enough to put through a home cinema system in Cyprus?

Hi Kev, The Film On is better picture quality via HD subscription , I tried it for a month !! but find SD OK at moment free. There seems to be two Film On Apps and one is better than the other !!!

They do give you a few seconds to watch HD but then ask for subscription if you want to stay with HD.

The sound quality is deff OK on Sky Digital so if you go down that route could connect up your system.

Let me know how you get on when you get here with your TV set up.

There is a couple of 'stalls' at the 'Duckpond' market Wed & Sun Mornings that seem to have knowledge on different systems, While you are there can get a great bacon sarnie from Neils cafe (Paphos People site owner !!)

first thing I need to do is get the broadband sorted out - whether broadband via fixed landline (eg Primetel) or WISP broadband (Holitec etc).

Do you have a view which is better?

Then to start with with I'll go with with existing Nilesat dish (and get what I can get from existing 2.7m Astra dish) and link laptop to tv with HDMI cable and use FilmOn. Dont know whether I will go for a HD subscription.

But in longer term dont think that I will be able to live with the wires, so want an internet tv set top box with wifi connection to router. Curently there doesnt seem to be too many options, so I might wait and see.

When I got here a company in Pissouri, Sunrise Systems, was recommended to me. He installed an android box, connected by HDMI cable to the TV and wired to my router. He did a great job of laying the cables inside a conduit which ran a short distance from the box to the router. It is not noticable and does the trick. Installed were quite a few apps, including Filmon and a couple of other apps that do the same job as a back up.
