I've had a go in one before, at a friend's house up at Aphrodite Hills - certainly a bit different, althoguh quite a bit more expensive I believe.

Only really worthwhile of you've a place where the sea is your backdrop so you get the "infinity" effect - I've seen one near us that isn't even pointing in the right direction, so not sure they quite got the idea

Imo, I think these aren't that good for communal pools, probably best for those who have a sea view for a back drop as Capt Fan as said :!:

Plus I'm not sure but don't they have to be at least 10m x 5m minimum size :?

Maybe one of the many Poolmen out there will come on board & tell you more information regarding your question mate

Neil, if you get an 'Infinity Pool' I'll not be able to sell you any automatic pool cleaning products, you'll have to get a Pool Man to clean it 2-3 times a week

Now I know why you were trying to put me off getting one
I thought pool men only came once a week...
(now theres a good joke)..........pool men only come once a week
And as it will be a communal pool, they will share the cost of maintainance .. I heard poll cleaners charged about 50cyp per month ...85.43 Euros..... ? ?

I must get a keyboard with a Euro sign ?
Sorry .. just thinking out loud :D

Pool cleaner charges between €68 & €119 per month depending on pool size, chemicals & how many times they come to clean the pool per a week :!:

I would imagine that the pump will have to be bigger or work harder?

infinity pools have a few problems that other pools don't...

firstly, as they have a larger "weir" and drop than normal skimmer pools, they suffer a far greater evaporation. as such, they require auto top-up as a 100% certainty, not an option. also, as even quite a light wind may result in literally tonnes of water being pushed over the wall, they require a back tank or reservoir to be installed below the level of the surface to catch this. (this is normally where the auto top up is fitted)

because of the increased evaporation, it is really important that water chemistry is watched very closely; our local water is so high in calcium, that the evaporation will result in calcium levels above 600ppm in a matter of a month or so.. enough to precipitate around the waterline, and on the weir as a white limescale buildup.
unless you are really lucky, it will cost more to keep the water to required parameters than a skimmer pool of similar size.

there is no minimum size for this type of pool, but the effect is lost if the weir is too short; the only one on my books at present is 9m x 4m, and has the 9m wall as the weir.

there is also the question of safety... the water drops into a channel behind the wall; where would a small child end up? some kind of safety guard must be fitted, and if the drop is not enough, this would be visible.

incidently, the pump does not have to work that much harder; the normal drop will be a maximum of a metre, and this will put minimal extra strain on a 1HP pump.

on the question of maintenance costs, and regularity of visits, i would want DAILY visits for a communal infinity pool; all it takes is a split lilo to end up in the drainage channel, blocking the outlet, and you could be looking at some heavy water bills!
a far better option for communal pools is an "overflow" pool; these are the ones normally with a white "railway track" running around the edge, over a shallow trough. it's impossible for them to block, and suntan lotions are skimmed straight off the surface. there's a reason why ALL the hotels in pafos have them!

Fantastic... at last someone with real knowledge of pools & willing to help you Neil :D

Thanks Ian, that was very informative, even I learnt something there

So are you still going for the 'Infinity' pool or not :?

You'll need to change your advert in the 'Property' section if not

i don't normally have anything nice to say about L*ptos, but if you go and have a look at either the "tala hills" or "vikla" pools, you'll see a couple of good examples of well installed overflow pools. it might help with the decision

But I always thought the idea of the infinite pool was to look over the sea as if your pool was 'inifinte' :?:

Doesn't your building project face the mountains Neil :?

So it's not going to really work, as it'll just look like a normal pool without a side wall

Does anyone know of anywhere where Neil can take is wife to see an 'infinite'pool that faces the mountains, so she can see what ot looks like before Neil as to splash all that money for something that won't look right :!:

she has already been to see infinite pools that dont back onto the sea...
they dont have to do this, to be effective, its the fact that they have no edge makes them infinite..
I have seen many that back onto mountain ranges, that look good..

The view was not the issue, it was cost and maintainance
that I needed to know..
