Cyprus Airways (CY) has announced it will abandon paper tickets for all flights from June 1.

The airline said yesterday that it was "completely ready" for the switch-over to an e-ticketing service.

The ticketless flight system has proved to be a huge success in the airline industry.

CY spokesman Kyriacos Kyriacou said that the airline had already been working almost exclusively with e-ticketing for some time. "All our flights to European countries are ticketless," Kyriacou said. He pointed out, however, that tickets to Middle Eastern destinations would still require printed tickets, until those countries had the new system in place.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has started counting down the days to total e-ticketing. "In 100 days, the paper ticket gets put in a museum. On June 1, 2008 we will achieve 100 per cent electronic ticketing," said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's Director General and CEO. IATA represents 94 per cent of all airlines.

Bisignani said consumers can expect more convenient travel as e-ticketing eliminates traditional problems caused by lost tickets and itinerary changes.

Ah so, its going to be ticket free. Does that mean that home users will print out all 20 sheets of A4 with all the T&C's for each travelling member of a party. Better for the environment to make 1 ticket.

I just print page 1 and read the t&c's on screen. Easy peasy. You can also save the email for reading later. How much does it cost for her to deliver my ticket?

As much as I like my post lady, I would rather print my ticket instantly rather than wait for her to post it through my letterbox 5 days later.

Kipz, welcome, although you I and many others will only print the relevant page/es. many people will print the whole thing, maybe even several times as they do so immediately upon booking, and when looking for the ticket later etc. I am a little cynical when it comes to many of the environmental arguements for certain changes that are thrust upon us.

Tannis,

It's up to us to spread the word.

Just print one sheet for your flight and read the rest on your screen, thus saving a million trees.

And my poor post lady's shoe leather.

And the vans that have to deliver the post, and the trains that carry it up and down the country, and the airmail. :D

Would love to be as positive as you on this one, however

Will simply be replaced by a mailshot or similar junk probably offering cheap flights on a paperless system!! or more bloomin health supplements.

This paper saving will no doubt follow the saving water programme that all locals adhere to.
