Sorry Tiggy, this was the newest member on the forum, whose web link took you straight to a rather distasteful porn site. Management have now, if a little belatedly, removed this member.

George,

We are unable to stop all these distasteful people from registering on our or any forum, but they do not become a member until I've check & activate them myself, unfortunatly I was out walking dog & then having my tea while these people tried to gain access :D

My deepest apologies for any offence this may have caused you :D

I am sure the Management on this site do all they can to stop this trash. Some do get past them, but we are only human after all?? some will get past but, 99% of them do not. So only 1% make it, not bad really is it. Glad to say i have never seen this on pp so they must be doing a really great job keeping out trash well done the management. :clap

Sorry Pete but no, not acceptable. This person joined and in joining entered a web site. This should have been checked out by management before authorising membership. It wasn't, end of.

They didn't try to gain access Pete, so you don't really need to use your dog as an excuse, they simply joined, and management should have checked them out before sanctioning membership.

I do appreciate the problems of these low-lifes joining forums such as this, but it only takes diligence from management to weed them out before they do their damage.

You said

"This should have been checked out by management before authorising membership. It wasn't, end of. "

If you read Petes post again, you will see that this person was NOT accepted by the site. To have authorised membership the admin has to accept you onto the site. This is the first email I received when I joined PP before Christmas.

Your account is currently inactive, the administrator of the board will need to activate it before you can log in. You will receive another email when this has occured.

I then received this email

Your account on "Paphos People" has now been activated, you may login using the username and password you received in a previous email.

So this "undesirable person" you talk about had not been activated, and from my understanding, to see this porn site, you had to click on their name as latest member, to view their profile, then click on their website! A heck of a lot of clicks! Do you do this for every new member, on every forum you are a member of?

If I am mistaken, I am sure one of our admin or moderators will soon be on to correct me.

Jean

To answer your last question first Jean, no I most certainly do not and a quick check on my profile will show you how often I peruse this board!! I do however check out www links occasionally - are you suggesting that I shouldn't do this???

However, the person was in the 'Members' list and did display a web address. How or why I clicked into it is of little consequence would you not agree, THE FACT IS, IT WAS THERE AND AVAILABLE FOR ALL MEMBERS TO SEE!!!!! And this should not have been the case had management been doing their job of filtering this garbage out before sanctioning membership!

BUT, in answer to the majority of your rhetoric, regardless of whether this person had been 'activated' or not, the web address was available for all to see.

Had management been diligent in their checks they would not have accepted this person as a member without checking their information as submitted, and thereby would have prohibited the spread of this rubbish, as all responsible web managers should.

And, for your information, I have not found this garbage available to public access on any other credible Cyprus web sites.

George,

I suggest that you calm down before you pop a vein!

Breathe and relax.

We are all human and therefore not infallible.

Apologies if I have upset you, but I have found this on other "credible" websites - in fact, I know of people who have been targetted by these porn sites, so this is nothing new, it is their sick way of attracting visitors to their sites. I can only thank our admin and moderators for filtering out the rest of the rubbish - unfortunately this one slipped through the net, as has happened on other sites. It was, however, quickly remedied, for the good of us all.

I am afraid that this distasteful stuff does happen on other forums.

I am a member of another popular Cyprus forum and I received a pornographic photo in my pm box one day.

Luckily, in my job, I see the part of the female anatomy that was displayed so graphically fairly regularly so it didn't shock me. I didn't have to check out a web site - it was there when I opened the message.

I passed it on to the site admin who apologised and dealt with it. I didn't blame them or slate them for not vetting their membership adequately.

If any members become aware of anything of this nature please let admin or a moderator know and it will be dealt with ASAP.

George, you seem rather unfriendly to me and this is a very very friendly site.
Do you shop at Asda, George?
I don't.

"George". Unfortuanately forums tend to attract all sorts of unsavoury people, sometimes you can tell from their setup details, some only once they start posting.

Thankfully this forum is growing into a community of individuals with a common link and those that are "in" and active will, i hope, appreciate the time the mod's and admins put into things running well for the enjoyment of others.

For those that don't see, the door is just over there ......

George,

It is possible that this 'unsavoury' person joined, was activated, and then added their colourful website, just as you clicked on their profile.

How unfortunate for you, not pleasant I agree, but is it really the end of the world? It has been dealt with now.

I suggest if you never want to experience this again, stay away from clicking on websites you don't know or stay away from forums. That is the only sure fire way you can avoid it.

Has made me curious though!! anyone know the address?

Forgot to mention George,

You are obviously an experienced user of forums judging by your previous post about how to sort members by their number of posts.

Cannot believe you haven't come across the odd dodgy member now and again.

Who are you really?

Myabe am a little odd here. I take plesure in seeing new members post and welcoming them to our "family" but I never look up their profile. I find that you learn what they are like by their posts and I agree with all the comments about unscrupulous people using forums to peddle this kind of filth. I am always cautious about accessing unknown websites, especially as my granddaughter has access to this computer, although monitored carefully. If you cannot accept that this type of person will try all means available to infiltrate a genuinely friendly forum then perhaps you should not join them.

I commend admin for dealing with this and wonder how many members actually were aware of it, or ever are.

George does sound like someone we know and as he will see from the posts supporting the admins and mods he is out voted (so to speak).

This is the friendly forum and the admins and mods do a great job - Well Done.

Sorry: not trying to be unfriendly but the expression "get a life" springs to mind here.
There are some sad people around are there not?
George obviously has nothing better to do.

Hi All

I used to run several forums as admin but as I said before I gave it up because of the constant ingress of spammers only interested in hacking or porn. Manual admin checking cannot ever be 24/7 and people have real lives and, George, I don't want Pete to be in front of the screen 24/7.

Most big forum software does not have spam attack prevention modules. Only the soft that runs small sites has this.

Once again, "Thanks" Pete for doing this task so that we can have this board.

Thank you all, I try my best to get rid of as many of these sites as possible as they appear but every now & then the odd one will appear & get seens by some members before I have a chance to clear it off the site

I will say one thing though, not 1 of these site's gain access to our forum, not 1 of them has been ativated & not 1 of them ever will be

I constantly check the members list & current website's attached to them, to make sure we don't have anyone adding a site after they've been activated, as this is also a concern but as of yet, we only have genuine members with genuine website on our forum & I thank you all for that

But as this post & many other posted since midnight last night will vanish once we complete the move over to our new Hosting company, I just want to thank you the members for making this site a pleasure to administrate, THANK YOU ALL

Thankfully, we won't lose any members due to the change over, as the only people who tried to register between 10.40pm UK time & now have been distasteful site, so were deleted

I have been off line for 24hours as I didn't get home til around 3.30 p.m. so didn't see the posts that followed mine until now.

Many of you have expressed thanks to Admin and Mods, and it is good to know that everyone is working to the same purpose. It appears to me that people who have registered and who actively contribute to this site do so because you want it to run a certain way. To this end you deal with comments that you feel are unjust or undesireable, so as members you have some control over what you feel is acceptable and what isn't. It is not just the admin and mods.

So don't forget what a great part you play in the success of PP.

Being magnanamous I prefer to think that George got out of the wrong side of her bed and needed a grumble. We all have days like that.

What an interesting thread - totally different than I expected when I first opened it!

Particularly interesting is how most members perceived "George" to be male and another that "George" may be female....

If "George" fancies "having a go" at forum Management for missing a certain website - may I suggest he or she visits one other certain cyprus-forum to see if they can get that one on an even keel

Now that particular site is one real tough cookie

If you go to profile you can see web addy and as i type there is a new memebr now so don't open it as it is plain to see what it is about.

The only way over it all is have mods from different time zones.

Evening folk,

You're quite correct in what you say Frank but at present, even the Mods can not activate or delete anyone trying to register on our forum, only the Administrators & I was out enjoying a evening meal so didn't remove this request until a few minute ago :(

But as I've stated in previous posts, these people are not activated on our forum until I activate them manually & if members choose to click on their website when its obvious what these people are offering, then we have no control over them accessing your computers with cookie downloads

Until its possible to cover these forums 24/7, I'm afraid some of these sites will find there way onto the membership list but they are NOT active members

You are doing a great job - keep up the good work :D

Sadly in all walks of life, there will always be people out there who knock what you are trying to do and think that they can do it better.

People like George who click on a dodgy website knowing full well what its content will be like just so they can then come on here and complain about it, are no different to those who when warned about a tv programmes content - watch it anyway just to complain cos they don't know where the off switch is :rant

Frank ~ Crazy muppets are also the ones in the car in front of me when I am going to work

If George is a bloke and he clicks on my website, he's in for a shock - it's for women who've had hysterectomies!!! Let's hope that George either learns to love our forum or finds the door ...

This is a bit like gossiping about someone when they have left the room, great fun but I can't help feeling guilty.

Is this happening to anyone else? always takes me two attempts to reply to a post. Anyway...

I agree Marj, let's encourage him/she back into the fold and realise this is the site to belong to. Loads of fun and info too. What more could could he/she want?

Ruth

Personally I think we should not waste any more time or energy on them. There are far more interesting things that we could be discussing.

I feel sad knowing that they are wasting their lives looking for things to nit pick about. I don't intend to waste my life goading them or thinking about them. It would just make me as bad as them. And I am not.

Maybe we should put this topic to bed now and stop giving credence to it? Just MHO for what it's worth.

Verity is correct in what she is saying :D why waste time discussing topics like this when we have a whole world of topics to discuss, we don't have a limit on discussion on PP, so ladies, gents, lets move on & chat about other more important things that have happened :D :D

Sorry Kipz, did you say you were having a problem with posting :?: Can you tell me in full what is happening or not as the case maybe, then we can get MARTIN to check it out :D :D

Why put this topic to bed. There is no way that another web site administrator would post about, and complain about, another site, which had problems with unsavoury links.
How long was this link on for? 12 hours, then he/she might have a right to complain.
Administrators of forums have always had this problem, in fact he whose name must not be mentioned on this site has admitted this fact and apologised to members that some porn links will get through.

Another web site administrator hasn't posted about unsavoury links on PP as far as I am aware LL.

If you want to carry on with the topic, be my guest. I just gave my opinion that I don't see the point. As long as it is within the T&C's PP won't stop you from having your say.
