Today we noticed that one of our office Euro calculators is way off the mark. We were quoting a price to a client and another member of staff was checking the price. Out of 5 Euro calculators 3 gave the same figure, one is out of the office with our Sales Manager and the 'dodgy' one was purchased at the same time as the others.
I would advise you to check your calculators especially if you are using several to make sure they are all the same!

We now have to go through all our accounts since Jan 1st to make sure we use the correct calculator.
EG if £120,000 should be €205032.17 if is not then the calculator is wrong

Interesting. What did the erroneous calculator work it out to?
The exchange rate is .585724 or conversely 1.708601 to the same number of decimal places. Multiplying by 1.708601 actually produces
€205032.12. If you expand the number to the full number of decimal places the rate is in fact €1.708601441 and this indeed produces €20532.17.

This subtle difference can easily be introduced in financial packages by entering the conversion as .585724 allowing a translation to 1.708601. Microsoft Money for example does this, limiting the conversion to six decimal places. Unit Converter Pro also makes this error, but at least with that you can add in the extra decimal places.

If the calculator in question did not produce either figure, my guess is that it was programmed with the wrong rate of exchange. It is probably adjustable to produce the correct rate.

It was not set at the correct rate. I am glad we found out when we did though.
