I know it had a good reputation a few years ago, but don't know how it fares in the new scheme of gov, outputs etc. It was a traditional teaching hospital with good standards.

What sort of info do you want to know about and I might be able to look up for you.

Are you wanting to know about training, or standards of care, or are you looking for someone? I know several people who work there, and I have visited it quite a few times, but I have not worked there myself.

Hello - sorry, my daughter has returned from Canada today so I have been a bit busy.

Thank you for your replies, I have looked on the QE website.

We are taking daughter down on Friday for day surgery, she has always gone to the children's hospital, but now she has turned 16 she has to attend the QE, it will be the same surgeon,
but different anaesthetist etc. We have always attended either a children's hospital or children's ward, and this is yet another transition in her life just now from child to adult and we are slightly apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. My worst fear is not being able to stay with her, as in the children's, parents are allowed on the ward all the time.

I don't know if anyone can allay my fears, but I thought I would ask.

It is a large teaching hospital and prides itself on being a centre of excellence. It has a good reputation as far as nurse training goes.

To be honest, Pam, it is all about the skill of the doctor's and nurses, not the actual building - and the QE is just an old, rambling imposing building in the main. I am sure your daughter will be looked after really well, and if you talk with the ward Sister they may make some concessions to the time you can be on the ward. She has the same surgeon, which is good for continuity of care.

If it is only day surgery you may be able to be there with her anyway. Ring the ward and ask.

This anxiety is more about having some of the elements of control taken away from you I think. Well it would be for me. When Kieran was discharged from Birmingham Children's Hospital and had to see a grown up cardiologist I stepped right out of my comfort zone. I am sure your daughter will be fine, and once you have been through it for the first time it will get easier.

I think I will phone beforehand, then we will have some idea of what to expect. Charlotte was in and out of Birmingham Children's Hospital regularly between 1999 and 2003 and we got to know quite number of the nursing and theatre staff, and now it's all change.

I shall go and browse the topics now to take my mind off it!

I doubt it Verity - we always went straight to ward 16 - the nurses there worked so hard looking after the children. There was a morning list and an afternoon list, and the morning ones had to leave before 1.00pm so that the afternoon ones could have a bed, I thought it highly amusing that it was called, 'hot bedding!'

We agreed to be filmed for the tv series. I did question my motives at the time, but it was a perverse way of seeing just what happened when my Charlotte was in theatre!

I trust that Kieran is fit and well now?

Kieran has a heart condition that will need monitoring for life, and he may need surgery eventually. He has been lucky so far, but he does play rugby which is the roughest contact sport he could have chosen. He was well at his last check up, thank you.

Good luck with the transition into the world of adult medicine.
