Programmed power cuts will be in place starting on Wednesday to safeguard the stability of the electric grid, Vrahimis Koutsoloukas, spokesperson for the distribution operator, said on Tuesday.

Speaking on CyBC radio, Koutsoloukas said the operator is working furiously to make preparations to cope with the closure of the six electric steam units in Dhekelia due to the planned strike announced by EAC union workers, which will leave most power generation for the island coming from Vassiliko.

The blackouts will be implemented in the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta, from 5-9pm Wednesday night, the spokesperson said, adding that cuts will be grouped into areas which will be affected for about 30 minutes to an hour at a time, and likely on alternating days. Paphos and Limassol will only be affected should there be an unexpected fault in the system.

So far the only appeal to the public is to be prepared to use generators where uninterrupted supply is crucial.

Koutsoloukas clarified that anyone connected to the EAC grid, whether using PV units or not will be affected by system power cuts.

Details are still being determined Koutsoloukas said with a further announcement expected later on Tuesday.
