THE LABOUR Ministry yesterday outlined retail opening hours for the coming holiday season.
From December 1-31, shops will be permitted to open Monday through Sunday, from 5am to 8pm, and from 5am to 6pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Stores will be closed on Christmas and Boxing Day.
According to the ministry, the extended hours must not affect employees’ terms of contract.
Under the law, shop employees work eight-hour days and not more than 38 hours per week.
The ministry said overtime work was permissible, but this should not exceed eight hours per week or two hours a day. Overall, employees must not be on the job for more 46 hours a week, including overtime.
Employees are entitled to double-pay for Sunday shifts, holidays and free mornings/afternoons.
