What is the one thing you would like to see changed in cyprus,there has been lots of threads about animals and i would go with that.Any other things bearing in mind we don't live there yet.

I think i am with you on the animal one Sid. but as said we are not there yet and who are we to say .Just hope we fit in and can make it work.

I think the one thing I'd change in Cyprus would be the driving abilities as I don't think anyone over the age of 30 has even past their driving test, if they have such a thing

I would change the declining coastal fish stocks into thriving easily catchable schoals, like it were when I was a lad!!

But I thought we were against animal cruelty....

It's quite tricky to pick one thing to change - there are quite a few little niggles, but doesn't that all just make up part of the fabric of the place?

If i was pushed I would say that I would like wages/potential income to be higher, while keeping the cost of living the same of course!

I think the biggest thing is to stop the building and have more parks as I would love to be able to take the dogs to a park and let them off their leads. Anybody got a bit of land they dont want that we could fence off and make it animal only? We could all help out by planting trees, bushes etc and people who use it help out with the maintenance.

That would be such an ideal world for animal owners Candy, now time to see the reality and imagine the stench from weeks and weeks worth of rotting dog poos from irresponsible owners who would stand outside, let the pooch run wild and not pick up after themselves. (or their dogs)

I think they could do something about the pavements or at least make good after work.It looks very shabby at times.

Certainly Frank, where an area becomes complete, the water, sewage and other services completed then the walkways should be completed. However therein lies the question of where the homeowners responsibility and the Municipality responsibilities lie. Is there any thing stopping a homeowner from repairing walkways adjacent to their homes. After all, spending 100,000's on a lovely home and furnishings whats an extra £300-500 to complete outside.

Ideally a hold back of monies at buildng stage should be written into contracts to force a builder to complete the work at a later date.

Totally agree and would do it myself.However a neighbour did it so he could get in his drive and then required telephone connection and they refused to dig as it was done by the owner.

Very weird excuse maybe true not sure.

I would change the amount of building work that has gone on for the last few years. Irresponsible overdevelopment and total disregard for the environment. One day the Cypriots will wake up to the fact they have sold their Island to the English!

I would also change the attitudes to animal cruelty.
Similarly their overtly sexist, racist attitudes and for good measure, I would change their attitude to the terrible indiscriminate dumping of rubbish everywhere.

If tourism really means so much to them they ought to look after their beaches and clear them of all the rubbish and import some decent sand.

Yes I know it said 'one thing' but unfortunately you cannot divorce one thing from the other.

Living here, there are major things that folk would change all connected with Environmental issues, whether, it be overdevelopment, rubbish and attitude.

So if you want a very broad brush category it would have to be 'Education' on all the aforementioned topics!!

Interesting that those complaining about the amount of building are already living here - presumably in one of the buildings? Or is it a case of now that you are here you don't want anyone else to have the same opportunity?

While there is an endless supply of immigrants from the EU and Russia particularly, there is going to be no end to the building.

As for footpaths, the property owners are usually responsible for providing and maintaining the footpaths outside their homes. It is now a requirement with all new properties to provide footpaths.

Personally I like (and have always liked) Cyprus as it is. It's a country that feels 'lived in'. It's a little shabby around the edges and has a welcome lack of prissy neighbours and silly residents committees telling everyone how to live.

The host population is welcoming and hospitable and tries to speak to us in our own language - which is more than can be said for us, who have the arrogance to expect them to do so. There is little political correctness, and none of that state nannying that has become an unwelcome part of life in the UK.

The local people will eventually grow out of their bad habit of smoking in restaurants. The rest can stay exactly as it is.

We have no political clout here, we don't even have a vote at national level, so our opinion doesn't matter a great deal. If the moaners managed to turn the place into a little England, I would be on the next plane out. However it isn't going to happen, someone would put a bomb under their cars first.

It seems the realities of the cultural differences are beginning to hit one or two correspondents. You will either get used to it and live with it, or it will drive you to despair and you will leave. It was ever thus.

Hi the 1 thing I would change in cyprus is the rubbish all over the place. every think else is cyprus and most of it just makes me smile.

Animal cruelty dos not make me smile its 1 thing I would change in the world .

I used to mump about the rubbish, which could be improved. However having had surgery recently, I have done a lot of walking in towns, villages and rurally in Fife and the amount lying all over the place sometimes puts Cyprus in the tidy league.

Letter already gone to council who would appear to have given up the fight. I bet they blame budgets.

I would want the police to police.

Everyday I see hundreds of road traffic laws broken and no one seems to care. Today The couple in front of me had children crawling all over the inside of the car, the man beside me was on his mobile with no seatbelt and the car behind me had a light out.

It makes my blood boil I swear I was this far away from making a citizens arrest

I know it was ONE thing but animal cruelty too, although I do feel I can help with that one by donating to charities etc.

BUT I can't wake the flippin police up !!

It is pure common sense. We already have a chronic water shortage. We are desimating the environment and natural habitats of many creatures. NO Environmental Impact Assessments are everdone on large scale developments. Whilst we love to live here we must learn to that greed over the development of this relatively small island will ultimately destroy it. Not just for us but for future generations.
Your assumption on 'no end to the building' is unrealistic based on the very fact that land is finite!

No-one wants 'prissy neighbours' though I know many do exist here. No-one wants to turn the island into a 'little england' though many try.

The majority of us love Cyprus with all its idiosyncrasies but the question was asked about what we would change. Change is inevitable. Because even on this small island education is ongoing and the inclusion of Cyprus in the EU will without a doubt have changes both good and bad.

I agree change is inevitable, and that some will be good, and some less so, but you are wrong about the capacity for building to continue. This is a sparsely populated island. There is a huge amount of land that may still be built upon.

It is only a matter of time before the developers move into the Akamas - in fact I visited the region around The Baths Of Aphrodite yesterday for the first time in about 12 months and was surprised at how much building had sprung up in the meantime. Whether this is a good thing I hesitate to say - it is certainly good for the island's economy, though less pleasing to the environmentalists.

Cyprus never apparently had the story of the goose that laid the golden egg, as the goose would have been killed, and probably eaten here for sure.

Water shortage? Well, we are three years into a drought. We have had droughts before and we will have them again. If it doesn't rain much more before April, we will have water rationing this summer, but the hotels will still water their lawns, the tourists will still have their showers and the pavements will still be hosed daily, until the taps stop running. In the last drought we had water for a couple of hours a week round about 2am. We managed.

Agree with KG about overdevelopment of areas of natural beauty/attraction and it must be imperitive that existing treelines, vegetation are maintained and also that adequate new green areas are encouraged with indiginous plants that can cope with weather changes and not rely on irrigation.
