CARS drove past a screaming woman fighting off a sex attacker in the middle of a road, it emerged yesterday.

Not one motorist stopped as they passed within inches of the terrified 20-year-old victim as the brute repeatedly punched her.

The monster then ripped off her clothes and sexually assaulted her.

Police said: “It was a lengthy attack. Anybody who saw it could not be in any doubt about what was happening.”

The attacker, on a BMX bike, pounced on the woman and tried to pull her into a car park as she walked through Stockton-on-Tees around 1am on Monday.

He kept punching her and they tumbled into the well-lit road. DS Mick Todd said: “At least five cars passed as she was lying in the road as the attack took place.”

She broke free from the man, who fled on the bike. The woman was treated for face cuts at a local hospital.

Cops are trawling through CCTV footage. The fiend is believed to be in his 20s and of medium build.

Ingrid Salomonsen, of local Women’s Aid, said: “People may fear getting hurt. But they can sound the horn, flash headlights and call the police.”

It's just so very sad, people just turn the other way and get on with their lives. I wonder if anyone in those cars who did notice what was going on is feeling in any way guitly for not trying to do something - he could have killed her!

But then looking at it the other way with all the media attention on have a go heroes being killed for something as daft as retrieving a football - would it make you think twice about trying to chase someone off?

Personally I'd have mown the little sh&t down in my car. But then I would probably go to jail and then have to pay him compensation!

Very difficult situation, as I think we would all say we would go to help.

I remember when living in London, we heard a screaming in the street. Looked out and there was a man hitting a woman. O/H runs outside to help and the woman started having a go at him for interfering.

Well I can understand why people would not help. Here my story. About 15yrs ago i was walking home from the pub, when i saw a young girl getting her head kick in by her boyfriend, she was screaming for help. I of course went over and and helped her, her boyfriend then started on me so i punch him a few times until he was on the floor. Once her boy friend was down and asking me to stop hitting him his girlfriend started on me for hurting him. She was kicking and pulling my hair. I said to her you wanted my help she just screamed at me to go away and leave her and her boy friend alone. The girl had blood coming down her face i think she had a broken nose split lip caused by her boyfriend. Any way the police arrived and i got arrested for assault on the young lad, and taken to the police station. I told them i was protecting the girl from this man who was really hurting her. To cut a long story,I was lucky that people was looking out of there windows and saw me helping this young girl out, and that the man started on me first so it was self defence on my part. Just before i got let out of the police station i was told never to get involved again and just call the police instead.

If i did just that would that girl be alive now or seriously hurt? I was so amazed that she started on me you could have knocked me down with a feather. Would i do it again step in ummmmmmm i have to think twice now

I bet people would have seen the hit & run if it had happened after all I'd have been behind you Peppermint & run him over also, after getting out of my car & beating the crap out of him first

What is it coming to when people are afraid to intervene on something like this, how frightened are joe public becoming, just in case they get charged or attacked themselves

Its about time people started standing up for themselves & if need be, take the law into their own hands to sort out these kind of people, as it looks like the law has its hands tide by Human Rights & red tape

Its pathetic

Now days you even have to be careful how you defend yourself in your own home.

I remember the farmer who was sent to prison cos he tried to defend his rights.

I commend you mate, you did exactly what I would do but I'd have expected the girl to stand up for her boyfriend, its the way things are, they want help but don't want you hurting them in the process

Best to take quick action & then leave, take the perpetrator down fast & then walk away, leave them to sort things out

In future that what i would do, go in for the attack make sure girl ok, then run like a rabbit. Thinking about it i would still step in as you never know when the girl is being attacked by someone she dose not know. How would i feel if the next day i hear someone being rape or killed??that i could have stopped. I could never let myself sleep at night

Same here mate, best to act & then face the consequences than not act & suffer the rest of your life with guilt

That couple were probably on Jeremy Kyle the other week, Mark. I can't believe how people think a relationship is all about drama and violence.

Back to the original story. That is appalling. At least stop the car and phone the police, even if you don't get out. You could make a commotion and if he ran off at least you would be there to help the girl.

I am not sure whether I would have got out of the car in this day and age. I would have to be in the situation to know. But I would not have driven by and done nothing. I didn't think twice when I saw my son being attacked on his paperround. I didn't care how big the lads were I let Phil stay with Kieran and I went after them.

A woman is often far more scary and effective than a man, believe me.

When it comes to your children you wouldn't stop to think once never mind about twice.

Your maternal instincts take over regardless of the attacker/s size etc. and never mind how old your kids are......Your own safety wouldn't come into the equation.

I didn't think twice. And they were all young men with tatoos and attitude. They found my attitude scarier. One of them came to find me and was in tears apologising. Another threatened me with his Dad! His Dad!! I told him to bring him on. Never heard another word.

I posted this on another site a while back but I confronted a lad who had opened the front door to my house, which had been closed but not locked just as he was about to help himself to Mrs DP's handbag which was visible from the outside through the door glass.
To cut a long story short, I was wearing only a vest and shorts, nothing on my feet. It was winter. The lad got into the front garden before I got hold of him. I knew who he was. After a lengthy struggle in the dark(during which he tried to get something out of his pocket several times) he got free from me and ran off with me after him barefooted.
I returned to the house to find my family watching Corra unaware of what had happened.
I contacted the Police, told them what had happened. They told me there had been a spate of similar incidents and I told them who it was and how I knew him.
The lad pleaded not guilty and I ended up in Crown Court where a fancy speaking barrister called me a liar and a whole lot more. I was in the witness box for hours and it was not a nice experience at all.
The lad got off. Yes, he was innocent. Stated it was mistaken identity.
Last year I found another lad inside my car rifling the glove compartment. I got him out of the car and held on to him. He was not gonna get away. Mrs DP rang the Police and after about 15 minutes this lad decides he's leaving. I thought this one is not getting away and I hit him with a pearl of a punch which flattened him and knocked him out. I then laid on top of him till the Police arrived.It took them 24 minutes and this was 8am in the morning.
They clarted the lad off and returned for a statemant shortly after. They returned later in the day and cautioned me and asked me about an allegation of assault he'd made on me !
I denied this claiming self defence and he eventually pleaded guilty and...wait for it.... was fined £50, That'll teach him eh ?
