Post subject: | The 'Honours' System |
This is my first post on this forum, and as it is controversial it could well be my last. My question is , what is the rationale behind the ‘ honours ‘ system where one is rewarded for the number of posts one makes, irrespective of content, by an upgrade in position albeit a purely spurious position . I know other forums do this, but I can’t see the point there either. Surely it should be the content that is important, and as that is purely subjective, it cannot be judged . Is a post interesting, is a post informative, does it ask a question, does it answer a question, does it express an opinion, does it agree, does it beg to differ, does it draw one’s attention to a situation. Surely a Forum is ‘ A medium for debate ‘, and for the purposes of debate I would suggest the ‘ Honours System ‘ element of the Forum be withdrawn. Quite a number of posts are just PM’s which only involve the sender and recipient and perhaps that is how they should be treated. H. |

Hi I agree with Geoff. It's just a bit of fun that some people enjoy and if it makes even a couple of people smile, then I'm all for it. Y |

I agree - the rating system is just a bit of fun. I don't think anyone really takes the honours system seriously. It is not just a case of debate and information. Engaging in some of the more light-hearted topics give a lost of us a relief from life's drudgeries. If you can make friends through this forum then that too is a bonus. There are more serious issues debated and genuine questions here too. We are all here to help each other if we can and give the right information. I don't think we can say that one post is more valid than another. Welcome Hermes, we look forward to debating with you |

Welcome Hermes, Glad to have you on board & look forward to reading your posts As its been said, the 'ranking' system is just a harmless bit of fun, which we all like to have, as you'll know from reading the T&C's, its says 'None of the above ranks give you any special entitlements, its just for fun' so people are under no illusion as to what it stands for, it just nice to have a bit of light relief in a forum, which these days is hard to find, as some people feel that forums are for information only, which is a very bad misconception Our forums caters to all like minded people who want to chat to other people & be able to have the freedom of opinions without being slated or told off for expressing what they think, as you'll know there are plenty of other Cyprus Forums out there that cater for the opposite & we understand this, so try to be different I personally don't find your first post controversial, as it is your own opinion & some will agree with you & other won't but that is what our forum is all about, opinions So please enjoy your time with us & feel free to give your opinion as you see fit, as long as its within the guidelines of our T&C's |

As it happens I don't particularly agree with the Honours system as deployed by the UK government (ostensibly at least under the guidance of the monarch) as I feel it is increasingly used as little more than another form of the cronyism that is becoming increasingly endemic in the United Kingdom these days, and has been further devalued by recent controversies surrounding honours (allegedly) being exchanged for political donations. But the Honours system on PP is saddled with no such negative connotations in my eyes, so I reckon I can probably live with it! p.s. please keep posting Hermes - I like a bit of controversy! |

Hi Hermes and welcome to PP. I think that the people who just post anything to get up the honours system would just post anything anyway, just to see their number of posts increasing. I don't particularly see the point of an honours system, but it doesn't bother me to a great degree. I just go with the flow. You are not being controversial, you are having an opinion. It is allowed on this site. I know we are in a honeymoon period, but I am sure there will be much controversy to come. It is human nature. Forums are for information and debate, and there are plenty out there with differing styles. Finding a happy medium is not always easy. I have had many pm's over the years I have been a member of forums, from people who have felt too intimidated to post. If allowing a little banter and light-heartedness allows more people to become confident in posting I don't see the harm in that. It facilitates a wider range of members, surely? Anyway, please post away. Controversial or not, as long as you stay within the T & C of the forum your posts will be welcome. Verity. |

I agree with CF re honours System in UK, but I am also in sympathy with Hermes, not just because he is, from his avatar, a fellow 'Gordon' [ we are from the Borders lot, not the Aberdeenshire lot [ Sh Sh ] ], and as Robert Burns put it "Ask why God made the GEM so small, And why so huge the granite? Because, God meant mankind should set That higher value on it." A comforting little ode lads ! but I'm for quality not quantity. Pete, better check if any of the members is named Bates just in case they become a Master Alastair |
