HOME-THOUGHTS, FROM ABROAD

O, to be in England
Now that April’s there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,
While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough
In England—now!
And after April, when May follows,
And the whitethroat builds, and all the swallows!

Robert Browning

I feel a bit like this today - ffs cheer me up someone !!!

I learnt that poem when I was 11 at school and to this day I can still recite it all the way I was taught to... strange how some things you were taught, which probarly you have never used since, never leave your head

I know what you mean. I learned the poem "Yes, I remember Adlestrop" when I was about the same age. I can still recite that one too.. We always said we hated school, but something stuck eh haha

Watch a bit of the BBC news and you'll soon get that out your system - they've got heavy snow and gale force winds over there at the moment!

Oh to be in Cyprus !
I picked my daughter up at 11pm last night off the Pafos to Newcastle flight. It was 1 degree and there was a bitterly cold wind. The walk from the terminal to the car took her breath away and I heard her shout above the wind " Why didn't you come to see me !"
A good question.

Blue sky when I got up and I thought "great" went outside to the bin and the biting wind took my breath away.Back indoors, heating on and extra jumper. Can really appreciate how you feel about wanting to be in England instead of sunny warm old Cyprus. Now has that cheered you up? xx

I'm a little bit worried about that April, as my mum would say -"she's no better than she ought to be"

Bit like that old reggae song "I can see clearly now Lorraine has gone"

I think they're working together........

That reminds me of a song some Asian band did 'Brim full of Asha on the 45".

I didnt know anything about it and thought the lyrics were "Got a thing for a flasher who's 45", which I used to sing frequently. Needless to say the kids put me right eventually, but only eventually...

Anyone remember Chicory Tip "Son of my Father"?

To this day I will swear that the second line is "Googling, I was Moogling, I was free from Drugs" and something about being suspended in a plastic bag. Can't be right, surely? Please help!

Actually, now I think about it, surely Kim Carnes didn't sing "It's enough to make a crow blush", or Desmond Dekker "me ears are alight" did they?

SON OF MY FATHER - 19/02/1972
3 weeks at #1 - 13 weeks on chart

Mama said to me we gotta have your life run right
Off you got to school where you can learn the rules there right
Be just like your dad lad
Follow in the same tradition
Never go astray and stay an honest lovin' son

Son of my father
Moulded, I was folded, I was preform-packed
Son of my father
Commanded, I was branded in a plastic vac'
Surrounded and confounded by statistic facts

Tried to let me in but I jumped out of my skin in time
I saw through the lies and read the alibi signs
So I left my home I'm really on my own at last
Left the trodden path and separated from the past

Son of my father
Changing, rearranging into someone new
Son of my father
Collecting and selecting independant views
Knowing and I'm showing that a change is due.
Son of my father
moulded, I was folded, I was preform-packed
Son of my father
Commanded, I was branded in a plastic vac'
Surrounded and confounded by statistic facts

I saw these perform near my home, around the Derby area when this was a hit... fair takes me back, duck

You must have been only three years old, my love.

Reading those lyrics, I'm starting to think my version makes more sense. Course, you realise I'm going to be singing it all flippin' day now........
