Molly came up with the idea of starting a 'New Build Diary' which I thought was a good idea if anyone out there is building a property from scratch, you could include picture's & a description of what is happening, so other members can see how things are done here in Cyprus

So do we have an volunteers willing to share their 'New Build Diary' with us on Paphos People

Very good idea.

Although our house is built we do have a number of pictures that we have kept (although would need scanning) on different stages, so if that helps I would be willing.

OK, well I have started the Moving Diary, and it is intrinsically linked to building the house. We are at the planning state at the moment - in fact our builder and architect have to attend a meeting with the planners on Friday.

I would be more than happy to contribute to this if it would help anyone else going down this road. I am going over next month so I can start the photo gallery, if anything is happening by then!!!

Checked out your first instalment and photos in the new build section.I bet it is going to look grand once it is completed.W would love to do this but not sure how things are going to pan out yet.

Did you design the build your self or used standard drawings and altered to suit your prioritys.

Well I hope it will all look grand when it is eventually done. As for the design, it was a bit of both. We knew that the house would have to be traditional and we discussed this with the builder/architect. They came back with a few plans, one of which we really liked, and we just modified some bits that we didn't like. We have modified them again, but not drastically, plus we have added things outside, like the outside kitchen/bbq area and much larger terraces. It is too big a plot to leave it all to garden. We've got that here (1.5 acres) so don't want that again, even though 2000 sq.m. is only 1/2 acre. Low maintenance is what I want now

A grey water system is where the waste water from baths, washing, showers, rain of your roof etc goes into a seperate tank & is reused for watering plants etc I think

Exactly right Pete. It has to be planned early in the build as you require separate manholes for each outlet. The water goes into a tank/s with a pump which we plan to use to irrigate the garden.

Imagine, if all the grey water was collected all over the island. There would be enough to fill a reservoir. Then everyone could hose down their paths.

I am sure that back in the dim and distant past (in the 80's) they used to use "grey" water that was provided for agricultural use. It certainly smelled like it when you went into any bar/cafe after they had finished hosing down. I mabe wrong, but I am sure I was told that by a Cypriot friend at the time.

Our landlord as fitted a seperate tank for backwashing the pool, so that the chlorine doesn't go into the septic tank & kill the bacteria, which for a Cypiot is quick a good move

Just a point about grey water ......

Unless a grease-trap is fitted, the waste from a kitchen sink should never be connected to a grey-water system.
It should be connected into the black-water system with toilets to a mains sewer, cess pit or septic tank.
