Hi Cypriotsid
We went to Tunisia last July. Can highly recommend the 5 star hotel accommodation, but beyond the hotel gates is another matter. Haven't been to Egypt but I'm told that's the same, so I suppose it depends what you are looking for from a holiday. The areas beyond the hotel are very rough and obviously you need to be aware of the massive culture differences so women have no social standing whatsoever. I'm used to holidaying in Cyprus where you can hire a car and potter about enjoying the local culture and experiences. That didn't happen in Tunisia - couldn't find a hire car company! So, you're stuck with the hotel and taxi rides if you want to go further. That said, the hotels are fabulous and if you're looking for a chillout, eat all drink all (in very plush surroundings) type of holiday then go for it. It's very cheap and the hotel staff are lovely - the smallest of tips gets you the very best attention for your whole stay! I'd return to Tunisia for a "recharge the batteries" type of holiday and it certainly wouldn't break the bank on costings. Hope this helps.

We paid just under 600 per person (& next to nothing whilst in resort!).

I have been to Tunisia twice - the first time to Port al Kantoui and it was great! You could walk around the port and it was really nice, but the second time I went to Hammamet and it was awful! Yes, the hotel was OK, the food not bad, the drinks good, but that was it! You couldn't go anywhere or do anything - it certainly did not feel safe for two older women to be there - we were hassled from the moment we stepped out of the hotel gates. Would I go again? No way!

We went to Morocco Frank and it was a sh*t hole, to be honest. As has already been said hotels are lovely, but stepping outside it is another matter............

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Tunisia too. They have the 2nd biggest Colliseum in El Djem. They also make their own wine which is interesting as since its a Muslim country. Therefore some of the cheaper wines can vary greatly :o

So I think its some a little different thats definitely worth a visit.

Had a few holidays in Tunisia went 3 times to an Island off Sa Fax - Kerkenna lovely place small, only one good hotel, went round on horse & cart or camels or beat up taxis. It was so much fun there met some great people I was on my own but everyone made you feel welcome. Each time I went back the hotel manager & staff all welcomed me and decorated my dining table up. Got great really funny memories of there. Went to Port el Kantoui lovely place the port is really clean and I had no problems walking round there alone. Also had a 3 days trip into the Sahara and done the camel ride ( I love camels) on one of the ones that was used as an "Extra" for the film The English Patient. Must see that film see if I can reconise him!!!
Lots to do there aswell if you fancy a couple days out
