Hi all

Can anyone help??? Need advice as to what are the best kind of heaters to buy. I would like to be able to have them on a timer so that they can come on in the morning before i get up and in the evening before i get home.

Can anyone recommend a good brand, where to buy them, rough price and best power output. Also how many do you think i will need in a 2 bed townhouse???????

I have an oil filled radiator on a timer switch that comes on an hour before I get home, and the apartment really does feel quite warm when I walk in. I would recommend that you bring a good supply of timers with you, as the one I bought here came with instructions "push in wedge to set time" - I still cannot set it Fortunately I brought one with me from the UK that has the little pins that you put into the clock, and that works fine. I don't have one in the bedroom, as when I'm in there on the computer I tend to put the aircon unit on for an hour, and in the UK I never had the central heating on in the bedroom anyway!

I'm sure someone will answer what size you will need.

Hi Sam,

You can buy oil filled heaters from Super Home Centre, beneath Debenhams which have a built in timer, you just set it to come on & go off when you like over a 24 hrs period

They're on wheels too, so easierly moved around... cost around €50 each, can heat upto 2500 watts but quite expensive to run tho

We've just been using a halogen heater - cheap to run and puts out a decent amount of heat as long as you're pretty close to it!

If you have aircon units you can usually set the timer on them to give you a bit of heat in the morning, but I find the mornings are usually not too bad.

What time do you get up then CF - can't be that early or you would not say the mornings are not that bad

I usually crawl out of my pit about 8am - where we are the sun hits our bedroom window pretty early so it helps take the edge off most days!

Maybe slightly off topic, but I'm sure I've heard of cupboard heaters available to keep your clothes in wardrobes etc from getting damp and mouldy in winter.

Can anyone please give some advise as to where these are available from.

Presently in the Uk, but planning the move.

I would recommend cupboard heaters. Can't believe how cold it gets in our wardrobes.

CF, half the day has gone before you are out of bed. Some of us are up at 5 a.m. on work days, and 6 a.m. for a lie in.

hands up all those who didn't realise how cold it gets here in the winter, and how the houses are specially built to be really hot in the summer and freezing in the winter.

was just thinking how ironic this thread is! if we had'nt been on this site in the recent snowy, cold months, planning the move, then heating would be the last thing you would think about for a move to cyprus!!!

Sue, I knew how cold it would be. I bought a hot water bottle with me when we came to stay for a week in the January before we moved over.

It is only for a few months, but those months can seem to go on forever if you don't get some good sources of heating set up.

For people planning new builds, I would definitely recommend insulation. The main body of our house is stone build and isn't too bad, but our bedroom is out on a limb and is the usual concrete. It is like an ice box. Hence the 13.5 tog duvet and extra blankets.

Fantastic for keeping cool in the hot summer months though.

Central heating and cavity wall insulation are the most important features/necessities without a doubt.

We had central heating installed when the house was being built, OMG if I was having a house built from scratch, cavity walls would be top of the list.

Good job we are planning just that then. The most expensive version too, as we think it will be money well spent. There are some cheap fixes, but not "proper" cavity wall insulation. Also, as we have it now and it is great, underfloor heating.
