My friend is looking to buy a fish and chip mobile trailer in cyprus. Do you know where he could site it i.e camp site, on an estate, he only wants to work it on a thursday ,friday, saturday from 4pm til late. Do you think it would work on Bar Street ? or near it. Would you like a trailer to come on your estate on certain days at certain times ? If you could help i can pass on the info on to him. He also wants to sell hot dogs burgers ect ect, all english brands.

Thanks

Universal would be a good area - we've got one place to eat - Pambis.

Hi Mark

I could understand the ice cream van but i think most folk go out for a meal or bbq in.I don't think there would be much business in our development.

it's a good idea, but i think it would be better if he tried various places, and if people enjoyed their meal, they will want more, there's nothing worse than having a "take away" and not enjoying it, i know that if it was me, and i didn't like the meal, i would not go back there.
maybe he could have some flyers made up, and ask the customers to give him some feedback, at least that way he will know wether it's worth carrying on with.

good luck

Don't come up to Ineia. We might partake once in a blue moon, but I can't see it taking off amongst the villagers.

I think there are two or three fish and chip shops in Kato Pafos that do take away or eat in, so I don't think it would be worth trying there.

Pegia may not be such a bad idea. It is a big area and I don't think it has a fish and chip shop, although there is one in Coral Bay.

It is difficult to know whether it would take off or not. I think your friend would have to "suck it and see". But good luck cos nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I know he want's to give it a go. He already in the catering trade so i know he will buy the best food on the market in cyprus. He not the type to put profits first, he would want you to love your food, so you come back time and time again, and spread the word about.

He going to keep his catering going in the uk, so he has an income coming from that. Any more idea's please?

You really need to check out the regulations about street trading and food/health hygene, as it would be a pity spending to set up and some smarty to shut you down pronto.

As youre aware, in that industry where there is aggressive competition, the competition can take exception to you.

If I had a fish and chip van I would do a diffirent village each night.
peyia on monday , mandria tuesday , universal wednesday etc,etc ..
I would stick to those nights so that residents of each village knew
that on say a wednesday night , the fish and chip man was there.
Then I would do the markets in the weekends.

but as I have to run the marketing for here,
build my development project and help run my cosmetics company
I Aint got the time . :D

Sorry to rain on your friend's parade, but the question should not be where it would be a good idea to do this, but whether it is allowed and what the licensing implications are.

There are many fast food caterers in Cyprus working from roadside caravans (none of whom seem to be getting rich), so all the best sites will have been taken, and unless your friend wants a fire in his van, he should be careful not to tread on toes.

I doubt that there is enough trade to make ends meet from the ex-pat market, when there are already some excellent fish and chip establishments around within an easy drive from all the areas of habitation, where you can eat in for virtually the same price as take-away. In the summer the thermometer can be nudging 40 degrees, who wants fish and chips then?

I love good fish and chips, but I doubt that I have shop bought fish and chips more than three or four times a year here - and that is with a chip shop within walking distance and another a couple of miles away at Coral Bay.

The Cypriot population will not make the missing numbers up, preferring instead their own traditional foods - and who can blame them. For €3-€4 you can get a superb meal of a hot sandwich from the roadside vans, around half of which goes into materials (and they have the benefit of family connections).

You friend is going to have to sell a lot of product to cover the overheads and make any money.

It might have some novelty value at first, but there are not many people who would welcome the greasy smell of fish frying, in a residential area, on a regular basis.

Your friend needs to do a lot more research before jumping into this type of venture.

I wouldn't imagine siting it at bar street would achieve much, I'd agree with Trolley Dolley, there's more than enough eateries and drinkeries around there, would guess the best thing to do would be target the estates with few eating places and high ex pat populous... possibly a different one on each night and establish a routine ?

Just a thought.

Cheers

Ian

Hi twosox, refeence the delivery/sales vans with "fresh fish". The village we live in in Fife has dozens of these wee vans depart in the morning to various corners of Scotland. The reality is the fish is not particularly fresh. Due to quotas, catch rates etc the trwalers have to travel 3-7 days in the the Atlantic, trawl for a week & then come back in. The main port is Peterhead, so the market happens there, the resold fish can be resold at market at pittenweem, to local traders who can then clean & prepare the fish in their own facilities/factories. So by the time it gets to your door it can be several weeks old and frozen/chilled for a while.

I know it might be a long haul to get the requisite licences but well worth doing. Your friend would make a living on the Universal area alone. Especially in the summer with all the tourists renting here.

It is a good idea, just needs the research and stamina to get through the red tape.
If it would help, there is a really good English lawyer in our office building and she speaks greek. You could always check it out with her.

That's a bit unfair. Have you tried the perch, usually available in the supermarkets or the excellent Zargana (which Papantoniou translates as halibut to which it bears no resemblance whatsoever) or Tsipoura (sea bream) or Lavraki (bass) or Mullet, all of which are first class alternatives to bland and often tasteless frozen 'cod' which is more accurately sold as 'whitefish'.

Well I'm all for it - especially as we have to travel to town for anything non taverrna.

City wok were talking of delivering here a couple of nights a week.

Both my houses is the uk were close to a chip shop - I do miss them sometimes! Although its a day out sometimes to do the flea market and go to Akrotiri for fish and chips and the old man has a doner kebab - yummy.

I often use the roadside sandwich vans for a hot halloumi and bacon or ham sandwich, as they offer great value for money. I tend to look out for those with female staff as some of the men have some dubious hygiene issues - though to be fair I have never had any problem with food from any of them.

Favourites are the one by the motorway at Ypsonas (the first one you pass on the way back from Limassol having left Orphanides roundabout - though stopping on the hard shoulder of the motorway is probably not the best idea) and the one at Prodromi when you turn left onto the road from Pegeia to join the Polis/Latsi road.

However what makes you think that the restaurant kitchen you eat from will be any better?

I don't like to think about the 18 different specimens of urine on the peanuts on bars, either.

You would never eat anything if you thought about it too much.

As an impoverished youth, way back in the mists of time, I spent some time working in London on a short contract. The expenses included bed and breakfast at The Royal Hotel in Russell Square (where fellow guests included a youthful Lulu, Van Morrison, and Heinz - who remembers Heinz Burt, who sadly died from motor neurone disease in 2000?). Other meals I had to find myself from a pittance of a wage that took no account of London prices.

In Leicester Square there was a themed pub called The Robin Hood, which supplied customers with cheese they could hack from a huge wheel, crisps and nuts. It is surprising how these helped eke out the budget when washed down with a half of bitter ;), and no thoughts about who may have p*ssed on the nuts

Lunch was a huge bowl of soup from a place run by out of work actors off Fleet Street. Happy days, but I could not have managed without those superb breakfasts at the Royal
