Hi
Can any of you advise on health insurance and when it should be taken out once your E.card runs out.

Thanks in advance

Jed unless you are a pensioner here, or working and paying SS contributions then you will have no access to public health care once your EU card has expired. Your options then are either private medical care or pay as you go.

I have no personal experience of private medical care but would caution re the exemptions of pre-existing conditions. This can prove to be an all-enveloping get-out-clause for insurance companies. A for instance - if you have say been treated for a hernia, should you develop another hernia it will be classed as a pre-existing condition. Or say a mole, which has been removed in case of malignancy, then any other moles etc would be classed as pre-existing conditions. You need to check this situation out thoroughly before signing on the dotted line. Consult several companies and check their terms and conditions thoroughly.

Totally agree with George, pay as you go the best option.

Unfortunately, pay as you go won't help when registering at immigration. They expect to see an insurance policy. Also, pay as you go can wok out quite expensive when needing a major operation and I doubt many of us have that kind of cash in the mattress.

As to monthly cost of health insurance. It does depend on age. I pay £40 sterling per month for inpatient only insurance.

If you don't qualify for state health care, then pay-as-you-go can seem tempting; but it is a reckless option, unless you have huge financial reserves. It would only take a major illness or accident that requires surgery and hospital treatment as an in-patient to have a potentially catatrophic effect on your financial status. You may be well now, but you don't know what is round the corner.

Medical insurance will not cover pre-existing conditions, so, if you have a chronic condition, you will not get any cover for that; and it could prove very expensive to maintain regular treatment. Otherwise the cost of medical insurance will depend on age and scope, but you should be thinking in terms of around £500 - £900 a year per head, and it will almost certainly be subject to a medical examination.
