Oh No!

We're barely over the Lidl hysteria and now we have a Tesco rumour.

What next? Harrods at the Harbour?

We have lived here 7 years and have heard that rumour since. Still waiting, as we are for the new marina at Coral Bay, also been waiting as long for that!

It's probably an enterprising Cypriot businessman opening a new kiosk and calling it Tesco.

If I remember from my trips to The Dark Side there is a shop the other side of Farmagusta called Tesco , cant remember if thats how its spelt, but has same colours and design as Tescos & Im sure it was mentioned that Tescos (UK) were trying to get it closed...........

PS Asda are opening aswell.......... :smilielol :smilielol :smilielol

Shirl, it was TESKO, but they were forced to take the signage down by Tesco UK. Last year the sign had gone from the main road pointing to the side road where it was.

I know to the people who don't live here full time that it sounds sacrilege to put a Tesco/Asda here, but to the people actually living here full time, it would be a godsend, especially then we wouldn't have to pay stupid prices for clothes :banghead

I'm afraid this is a misconception many people have. Prices here are based on required profit margins just as they were in the UK 50 years ago. Which is why the standard prices for goods are very similar in the big supermarkets and the local village stores. There is nothing to suggest that whoever managed Tesco or Lidl or any other store would deviate from this policy. Hence Carrefour prices are Cyprus prices not French prices.

Until some big motivator can cause price cutting competition, and I suggest the population is not big enough for this to happen, the only hope for "lower" prices would be a boost in the value of the pound.

Sad but true, I believe.

True, Pete, but I can always live in hopes. . . . . . . the problem is that they take the sterling price, take that as Cyprus pound, and multiply by 1.70861 to get to euros!!! :banghead Hence my £35 skirt in Debenhams, actually cost me €60 - nobody treats my pensions that way - if they did I wouldn't be complaining!

Of course you would. Tesco prices its goods to the local markets. If you think that they would charge the same here as they do in the UK, then even if by some mischance they came here, you would be very disappointed.

Carrefore is even bigger than Tesco. Do you see Carrefore charging the same as its French stores?

There isn't enough business for the supermarkets already here. Another giant supermarket chain would be as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool.

Welcome by whom?
any competition to bring prices down would be welcomed by the consumer!
In order to capitalise on the market - any chain could easily wipe the floor with the majority of the stores here and win hands down. If you say it cannot be done - then how come the Euro shop does it??? Prices in there are relative to the UK market especially on Boots products. It just needs large chain to see the glaring opportunity and jump in.

I expect the flyers seen are from the person now importing Tesco value goods into Cyprus and selling them at Paphiakos Animal Welfare's Saturday Morning Market at their clinic, opposite the big church, Tomb of the Kings Road. Every Saturday 8am - 1pm. Alternatively you can order goods on line. They have a store in Larnaca check out the article in the Cyprus Mail http://www.cyprus-mail.com/living/tesco ... r/20100509 also the website: http://www.homeshopping.com.
