Hi All

A couple of weeks ago we where informed by a friend that is possible to opt out of paying Social Insurance in Cyprus.

By doing so, you would not be eligible to ANY state benefits i.e. Pension, Schooling, Medical, Unemployment Benefit etc.

As we have NO intention of claiming any benefits here in Cyprus, nor is it worth doing so. We have started to make enquires regarding this, but we seem to be hitting a brick wall.

Has anyone any experience of this?

Ps This months SI bill was €278.79 for Jo and I…

We was interested to have other peoples input and or experiences on this one.

I was in there yesterday, but nothing was said.
I pay what is recommended to pay
but I intend to stay here until the end , so maybe its best I pay
something .

I was told by the social insurance office that I had to pay, although I was paid by my UK company. They even had the cheek to backdate the payments to the date of the Cypriot company formation.

I would like to know how to opt out, as at the moment I want to keep paying the UK NI.

I would be very interested in this.

I don't use free schooling or intend to claim unemployment benefit! We are still paying into national insurance in UK so I would rather spend the money on private medical insurance.

I was told it was law and everyone that worked had to pay into it.

I have been harrassed since I packed the business up last year by the SI office - nice of them to keep sending me letters that I don't understand.

Not only that if you have registered for VAT and then want to deregister you still have to have your accounts submitted once a year - even if there is nothing.

I've never heard of an option to opt out, but would be interested to hear if one does exist.

As an aside, does anyone know if there's an easier way to pay than having to actually go down their office - can't you stick a cheque in the post, pay online or something?? (going to be a bigger inconvenience now I'm not in town every day anymore!)

My office manager has to go and pay at the office, don't think there is any other option.

I am sure there is no opt out even though you are not wanting any benefits in the future.

I think the only way to opt out of SI is not to sign up in the first place

The accountant that I gave you the number for, does it all for us
as part of his service, you drop a cheque in to him oncea month.

yeh! but you dont queue, and you dont get grilled by the woman
at the counter. its all part of my accountants services..
they even ring you near the time to remind you to drop the cheque in..

You can pay by direct debit, but the form you have to complete is in Greek

I think you will find that it is a legal requirement. They will catch up with you in the end. They traced Phil to Ineia for his final payment - not that he was avoiding payment, he had not had notification - and he would have been taken to court for none payment.

I am paying UK NI, but I need to find out about Cypriot SI too. If they want me to pay it and back date it I will contact the UK NI office and get a refund. At the end of the day it will all add to my state pension, whether it is paid here or in the UK.
