Hi everyone,
Thought I would just let you all know that we have just(1am!) had a really strong earth tremmor, the house really shook. When we were in Cyprus in 1966 we had 3 but I have never felt one this strong in England before.
Why am I still up at 1am you might ask, because we have just had a really good night in the pub! John was playing at a reunion with guys from his band from the 60s, not much to drink but a lot of good music! Goodnight Val :)

That may be down to another STAMPEDE of people leaving to live abroad and the ground settling back again.

Morning all

I live in Rochdale and slept right through it but on the local news many people are saying their beds, houses etc shuck. Apparently it was really bad in our region.

Good morning all ex-pats, you lucky people! At 1 a.m. I really wished I was in sunny Paphos - anywhere would do actually - just not Lincolnshire!

Yes the cliche "did the earth move for you?" has been done to death on the local radio this morning and the answer from most Lincolnshire folk is that it certainly did, and it wasn't pleasant!

Before the actual tremor there was a strange humming noise and then it hit - the whole house shook and the wardrobe doors (and everything else) rattled. Since we live about 7 miles from a military airbase, I thought perhaps a plane had taken a turn for the worst, but then again the airfield closes at midnight. Anyway, it turned out to be "the quake".

Fortunately it appears nobody in the local area was severely injured although several chimney stacks fell down and damaged parked cars in the local market town of Gainsborough (20 miles from Lincoln) and streets have been closed to clear the rubble.

Things could have been much worse. The sun is shining and who would believe we were all out in the street wondering what an earth was happening only a few hours ago?

Enjoy your day! :)

There was a picture on the BBC news this morning of a bed that had been crushed by the chimney falling through the ceiling!

Lad in there had gotten away with a broken pelvis - still nasty, but could have been a lot worse!

It's quite funny really, as the guy from the Edinburgh University Geological Dept said these happen every 30 year at this magnitude but then went on to say the last one was in 1984, so by my reckoning, that was 24 years, so does that mean they are becoming more frequent or his maths is crap

As the UK lie's on the Eurasian Plate, some way from the edge , the chances of it getting any worse than a 5.6 is pretty slim, unless there is a major shift of the sub-tectonic plates which are so far under the earths crust, they don't know where they are, which is possble, then you could see an increase in magnitudes & frequencies of earthquakes in & around the UK :D

Just remember folks, we are very close to a major tectonic line:

Hi! Neil,

Did you have the newsagents opposite Blackwells? If you did then we met many years ago. I used to be Mrs. Lindo in another life

Wendy

We are in Sale near Manchester and never felt a thing - although I have always said I could sleep through an eathquake - I think I did last night :?

Everyone at work this morning was talking about it seems like it was quite strong all over the Manchester area

:? If you don't like earthquakes, you're coming to the wrong island, as we have rather larger one's than you get in the UK :D

The last major one was a 6.5 back in Aug 99, as we are on the same fault line at Turkey, so have quite a few over the years

Anyway, Welcome Jackie & Dave, glad to have you on board, what took you so long

Hi Jackie and David. You were probably nearer to the epi centre than we were, in Rochdale. Our apartment block shook, Rachel's perfume bottles etc, which were on a bookcase shelf all moved from the back of the shelf to the front, and all the internal doors opened, even though they were on internal latches.
After shocks can be expected, though they are usually not as powerful as the initial quake. We had two or three after the last earthquake we felt, which was off the North Wales coast.

Julie,

My sister lives in Royton near Oldham (only a few mles away from Middleton) and never felt a thing, yet my daughter who lives a couple of miles up the road from my sister felt the bed moving!

Partner felt it bad where he was, yet a friend who lives in Middleton too, although maybe a mile away or so, never felt a thing!

Weird eh?

Wendy.
