Been following this on the news and wondered what others thought.10 pge spread when others who have lost loved ones only get 2 line mention.

I can understand why as threats would be even greater on the troops nearest to him.

Right i got me flack jacket and tin hat on. :?:

Have no interest in the prince whatsoever, my concern is for the other soldiers, their job is dangerous enough without having him with them.

Having said that I don't think they should be there at all.

I am disappointed in the American press for leaking/ exposing this story and thus exposing many of our troops to even more danger.

They've allegedly pulled him out. Don't know what to make of it all. Why was he there in the first place ?
And why did he allow all the media coverage which was way over the top.

Correct Axel,

More like a BULLET MAGNET, we were visited by Kate Adie among others during Gulf 1, they turn up with all the latest desert wear and my guys were in jungle greens as they had not enough of the yellow stuff to do a full issue.

The main comment from the troops was 'THEY DID N'T THINK WE WERE THAT FAR FORWARD'

She even turned up at a bomb attack in Cochester, hovered around the Drury Arms on Layer road, then went for a chinese.

See they have american camp cots to sleep on, not quite covered up on show, sure the guys really appreciate all the hype.

I'll say one thing for the lad, at least he's had the guts to go out there, as he could of so easily taken everyone's advice & stayed home but as he said, he's in the Army, so why shouldn't he go

Yeah I know it puts extra pressure on the lads around him as they become even more of a target if it isn't bad enough already for them, lets just hope nothing happens to any of them, even though we know it will :(

Did anyone watch the Ross Kemp in Afgan series :?: my heart goes out to those boys/gurls, its not something you want any of your 18yr old doing but its a life they choose for themselves, we can only sit back & pray there return safe

I saw the interview on TV last night
just before he was pulled out
he said it had been scary but he had a good time.
he said its funny, as they never told any of the local interpreters
who he was , he said I have a cigarette and a chat with those guys over a cup of tea eveyday , then he said, "I would have a beer , but you cant bloody find any around here ..
I am just soldier like anyone..
I would have been able to stay longer if it was not for you dam press ..
but now that its out , I have to leave for the safety of my fellow soldiers"

Just for the press, when did an officer last sit behind a 50 calibre and fire, there should also have been a number 2 sitting by the ammo box watching to ensure the belt fed correctly.

I agree he went and of course so do thousands of others, in my opinion they have now turned it into a circus with contrived posed photographs.

He would be damned if he did and damned if he didn't. In his position he can't win whatever he does.

I do not have a military background so can't comment on what the pictures showed. No doubt they would have been staged for an eventual press release, except the Americans forced the issue. Just like any press release.

Why do people have to nit pick? The fact is that the lad was there, did the same job as the others, and did the sensible thing in getting out for the safety of his comrades once his whereabouts were leaked.

He was in the same danger as all the others - you can't predict where a missile is going to hit, or when a landmine might go off.

Frank asked what people think about this. Well I think he has guts. He didn't have to put himself in danger, but he did. Give him a bit of credit. At least he isn't an armchair soldier.

Welll said Verity - he would have been damned either way.

The fact that he had been there 10 weeks and would still have been there if the news hadn't been leaked, deserves some credibility.

I am knocking the circus that has now formed and put peoples lives at risk.

He did not have to pose for these photos either, and why single out one person among the thousands that are there and those that have to return for yet another tour of duty.

Yes he has done his duty as have many others not going home ever and that is where opinion differs from the families that have lost loved ones reading the hype on TV and in newspapers.

Personally, I think he did the right thing, he followed in his Uncles foot steps (different branch) & stood up to be counted as Andrew did during the Falklands conflict, now its been released, supposedly by the American press, he's having to be pulled out, not just for his safety but for his fellow soldiers, but then again, maybe that's just paper talk too, just to make Joe public think he's no longer there, who knows

Well said Verity

I have been watching these postings and you have said it for me.
(Says omething about my confidence in expressing my different view)
Harry has no choice, he was born a royal and all that comes with that!!
All his choices have to be debated and his status will not allow him a normal youth and all that is involved, including fighting for his country using the skills has acquired. The reason he cannot be like all his colleagues was demonstrated by early leeking by the press.
He isn't allowed a normal life due to the press and media circus.

If he had not satisfied the press by posing and talking in a controlled way, he would have been more likely to have been hounded by them (like his mother was) and that would have created far more danger for him and his colleagues.

I say good on ya Harry, continue to be as normal a lad as possible, it can't be that easy for you.

Lets not forget he will be one of us who will be missing his Mum on Sunday - and at such a young age - at least I had my Mum for 60 years.

Chris

Interesting reading and can you imagine if he was captured.I think it is best if he returned if not already.

Thanks for the replies. :D

Chris, I am glad you found the courage to post your views. People will differ in their opinions, but as long as we all respect the right of others not to agree with us I don't see a problem with that.

I think you are spot on about the photos. I believe that he does have an obligation to compromise a little and agree to staged photos. He is a royal. He also has skills that he can use. They should just not have been leaked before the tour was over - and you can't blame him for that.

He could have been killed just as easily as anyone else's lad or lass. He has family who would be devastated too.

IMHO if anyone is to blame it is the media for not having any scruples.

Hmm odd one this...

I have mixed feelings on this one....

on the one hand Kudos to the bloke for being out there and doing the job (along with everyone else of course) but its good to see a member of the royal family on active service and "doing his bit"

On the other hand I can't help but agree with the other commencts, knowing he was part of your unit you could n't help but think he'd be a mortar magnet.... and therefore make you more vulnerable....so for the benifit of his unit its probably for the best that hes back home now.....

No easy answer really....

I just think its good to see a potential monach serving his time....

Cheers for now

Ian
