How much does a sea view matter to you?
I am asking this because, we have a client who has seen a house that suits all her requirments. The house to quote 'is perfect'. Now the only downside is that it only has sea views from the upper level and the extensive roof garden and not at ground level.

I personally like to look at the sea, but it is not of major importance. I would rather look at the hills, valleys etc. To me, a sea view in the dark is rather foreboding. A blackness. Whereas you can see all kinds of shapes in the hills.

This client is a 'newbie' only been a couple of days. So this may an influance.

I would just like to know what you guys and girls think. Is it just me that isn't really bothered? or is it of paramount importance and I am missing something here?

Hi I would say a sea view is a bonus. Not essential.

You are influenced by your expectations. If you have never had a sea view because you live in-land then it may be number one on your list if you move to a seaside area.

Personally a sea view was very important to me. Phil wanted a mountain village, and I was happy for that as long as I could see the sea. I have the best of both worlds - except when the cloud descends or the heat haze means that you can't define the horizon.

But the sun through the cloud when it falls on the sea is spectacular, as are the sunsets.

I wouldn't want to compromise if a sea view was in my top five requirements. Buying a property is a big outlay for most people, so why should they compromise on the important issues?

If this person wants a house with a sea view from both lower and upper levels then it is not so perfect.

Depends when you would most like to look at the sea, first thing in the morning from your bedroom, or in the evening on your patio?

If all/any time then she needs to keep looking?

Personally I could compromise on the sea view - you can always go out to see the sea, and I agree that the sea at night is not so appealing.

we have a villa in the mountains, we can see for miles and miles around us it just great so quite just great. Sea view would be nice, but i do love where i am.

We love our sea view, would try for another if / when, we move again.

Not sure if it's a dealbreaker though............................would depend on whether or not the house made up for it in other ways.

We have a sea view from our patio, or the lounge if you stand up. Lovely in the winter, but for most of the summer you can't see the sea for the heat haze. Would not be on my list of requirements. I would be rather thinking, if an apartment block was built in front of me, what would I see.
At least on our site, because the way the land falls, nothing can take our views away.

I fell in love with our house and at the time didn't even know where it was in relation to everywhere else - after seeing so many and being driven round back streets we were completely lost.

It did have a partial sea view but since then the trees have grown nearer the coast so it is limited, but if I go on the veranda I can still see it, but that was not important to me at all, as I can drive down in three minutes to see the sea if I really want to.

I guess it is everyone to their own.

LL - you made a very valid and important point there about having your view taken away. That would definitely be high up on my priorities.

Thankfully, however, where we are situated our views cant be taken away. :lol:

With all the development going on along the coast, Marinas, big hotels etc whose to say a Sea view can be guaranteed for ever. If the house is right in other ways maybe they will compromise.

Im just about to move to my third home here - bit of a gypsy :D

The first place had no views but was a fantastic place, only moved because it was too big and my idea of fun is not to spend all my spare time cleaning.

House No2 is fab, ticks all boxes - detached, sea view(just down the road from your office actually Helen), quiet etc etc but not really any privacy, despite only having 2 neighbours. Its more like living in a holiday villa and not a home so time to move on.

House no3 - a BIG step down from current place, an older bungalow with less bathrooms(I love lots of bathrooms for some reason and despite having a large backside, I can only sit on one toilet at a time so I need to be realistic), no pool and THE most revolting tiles in the world(but I can change them Ive been told), its a little further up so the view is not as good as the one I have now but thats not a factor.

In my humble, I think the newer you are to the island, the more important a sea view may be, even though it wasnt a factor in my plans, it could be the stuff your dreams were made of prior to your move.

Each to their own. Im thrilled at the prospect of having a garden and have got my dungerees at the ready! :lol:

When i came out to look at properties a major criteria for me was a 'nice view' though i wasn't sure what i wanted it to be, so i was open to anything. I am very lucky that i have a sea view from the front, and i feel a warm glow when everyone who comes to visit or do work says wow you have a great view! I have the mountains at the back so i have the best of both worlds i feel. the compromise is that i have a static JCB to the side and a small farm with the associated cockrels with wonky time clocks!!! Still love it to bits and wouldn't change it despite the associated problems with an older property.

im not fussed ....used to live by the sea in scotland for a while wasnt as pleasing on the eye as is in cyprus.

its nice to go down to the sea and have a coffee/beer and appreciate it more that way. im supposed to be working anyway so shouldnt have time to view it even if i did have a view ha ha!!

I can see both sides - I currently have a sea view from upstairs (looking at it right now :sunny) but none from downstairs - when we were looking at properties we did have it quite near the top of opur priority list, but now we've been here a while the novelty has kind of worn off so I don't think I would have too many qualms about giving it up if everything else was spot on.

C.F I think you have just summed up my thoughts. That on occassions it is a novelty thing. But I can see both sides. I just wanted to know what you guys all thought.
I know it is each to his own but I also know that once you are here, and have spent time here your priorities do change.

If I want the sea I can drive to it. I can see it from the office windows but it - the view washes over me - no pun intended! I do however, enjoy contemplating looking at something that for me is interesting. I love shapes and shadows that valleys/mountains/hills provide. As I said -each to his own.
It would be interesting to see how many people's priorties change over time when they have been here a while.

I never get tired of views.

I can sit on my balconies and still appreciate the views of the sea and mountains.

Even when I'm in the swimming pool, I love to lay on the lilo and just look and think how luck I am. :lol:

Madbutsane, it is in no way a critism of any client whatsoever. In fact it is a generalisation. However, I was seeking a very genuine opinion as to other members views. What really matters to them. One of the hardest things, when you have been here for a considerable time is to remember back and think what was important to you when you first came here. In my opinion your desires, needs and wants shift over time and your priorities move accordingly.
For some people views are paramount and for some not so important. It is always a trade off in some form or other.

No names have been mentioned and the opinion that I expressed (with reference to a client) is so general that it could never be attributed to anyone person. I would never do that.

I think you are reading this as a personal post rather than seeking an overview on peoples general views.

We have sea and mountain views, though they are maybe not the best ones around, but what would be more important to me is not having buildings too close in front or behind. Just to have a feeling of space when you look out of the window is more important than what you actually look at, assuming you are not facing the local tip, of course :lol:

All I was bothered about when I came to view property was would it be suitable for our animals (a dog & 2 cats at the time) and how secure the fencing was.

After we moved in and I went on the roof of our bungalow to clean the solar panels - I had a pleasant surprise when I found I could see the sea out towards Akrotiri. However, I was more taken with the fact I could see the "golf balls" on Mount Olympus and the snow up there in the winter time.

But - I've always said a sea view is only great if you have something else to put it in perspective. ie - I wouldn't want to be in a house that just looks directly out at sea and nothing else. I much prefer to be able to look out across at another piece of land whether it be another island or peninsula.

When we go to Curium beach, I find I'm more taken with looking along the coast and the contrast between the cliffs and the sea rather than just out to sea.

What a good job we are all different!

Molly you would need skyscraper trees to block your views.Our place on universal s halfway up and we find it pleasant enough.No regrets yet.
