This is my second attempt at this post as it "went missing" last night but the wonderful Captain Fantastic retrieved it for me.

As some of you know my husband Ken was diagnosed with terminal cancer of the sinus in his face in August last year but then in February we were told there might be a possibility of them doing an operation but he had to have a bone scan first.

When Ken was first diagnosed with cancer in 2005 we were told it might involve a major operation which meant losing half of his face including his eye. Because of this we were thinking that this was the operation that they were now considering but when we went back yesterday for the bone scan result we got a really nice surprise. They said the bone scan was ok and that because the cancer had shrunk so much, it is now only the size of a two pence piece, they could do a minor operation with no involvement of the eye or upper jaw and providing they could get everything out the cancer would be cured!!!

You can imagine the jubilation that we felt. I know it is early days yet but from having hardly any hope last year to this is fantastic. When we were first told about this in August I just could not see a light at the end of the tunnel but of course now is a different story.

Our dream to move over to Cyprus to live may be a reality after all. We are coming over on Saturday for a 2 week holiday and are going to really enjoy it now. Ken is to have the operation at the beginning of April so he will be nicely rested before it.

Hi Lyn,

Fantastic news, I can't imagine how you & Ken must have been feeling before this news but I bet that you're both in seventh heaven now

I was wonder if you'd be willing to tell our members what symptoms Ken was suffering from before he was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, as it may help other members in the future, should this happen to any of them

I'll understand if you decide not too, as it must be a terrible situation to be in, so please don't feel pressured, as I wouldn't want to bring back bad memories to you or Ken

Any information would be gratefully appreciated

I will wait until the changeover of the hosting company before posting an official date for a get together, as apparently it will "disappear" when we change over.

BUT put a note in your diaries girls - Wednesday 19th March, the Ladies Coffee shop (let's hope the gas doesn't run out this time )

So pleased for you and ken, it is always so good to hear a positive outcome and I sincerely hope you enjoy your break and the weather is kind to you.

I will miss the coffee morning as we are out now and return on March 15th, but hope to meet you in the future, when we return to this wonderful island.

Hi Lyn. I have already given you my heartfelt good wishes and said how wonderful this is for you and Ken, but I can say it again.

Welcome to PP. It is good to see you posting on here.

The weather is beautiful at the moment so I hope you get some good bone warming sunshine whilst you are over here to relax you both. I know Ken will be keeping out of it, but the warmth does you the power of good.

Take care both.

Hi everyone we would like to say thank you for all your lovely replies it really does help.

Pete,

You asked me what the symptoms were and to be honest there were very few. It all started in May 2005 when he had a small stye on his eyelid and he kept going to the doctors each week for about 4 weeks and being given different types of drops, some antibiotic drops and other kinds as well but all to no avail. As he had seen the same doctor each week I told him to see another doctor and get their opinion. As soon as he saw it and the medications he had had he said "I don't like the look of that" and sent to him to the Eye Hospital within a few days. They tested him and said there was nothing wrong with eye and sent him straight to the Maxillo Facial Unit the same day. He was eventually sent for two biopsies through the top part of his mouth and then we got the devasting news he had cancer.

He was sent to Christie Hospital, a major cancer hospital, and was given 20 sessions of radiotherapy after which we were told it had gone. 18 months later his nose started bleeding for no reason and again we were told they didn't like this and given more biopsies and then told he had terminal cancer. You can imagine the devastation we felt.

He then and 5 months of chemotherapy which he actually tolerated quite well compared to a lot of people and as I have said we were told this week it had shrunk so much they could now do a minor operation with the possibility of a cure.

One other thing is Ken is not the kind of person who was always at the doctors and to be honest I thought he was mythering about nothing but he insisted on going and thank goodness he did. My advice is to go with your own instincts and get things checked out.

Sorry it is bit long winded but you did ask!

Look forward to meeting some of you at the coffee morning and as I have said we are going to have a good rest and recharge the batteries.

Lyn

I have always maintained that you know in yourself if something is wrong - no matter what any doctor tells you. This happened to me twice, and if I hadn't persevered and insisted on seeing a consultant on both occasions, I wouldn't be here now!

Well done Ken for trusting your own instincts - and well done Lyn for being with him every step of the way. It's now time to relax, enjoy your holiday, and prepare for the surgery on your return to the UK.

See you at the coffee shop

Hi Jan,

I know it couldn't have been nice to go through & I hope & pray that everything goes well for Ken & I would like to thank you big time for spending the time to write this account down, as I know living in a hot sunny country like Cyprus, things like this can go un-noticed until its too late, so I hope that any of our members reading your account, might keep think twice if they find something similar :!:

Thank you again :D

Hi Pete,

Your welcome. Anyway it got me out of having to start sorting things out ready to pack!! I am one of these people that leaves everything until the last minute but I get there in the end. Our last flight with GB Airways Manchester to Paphos will have to try Easyjet after this one.

Yeah my 2 boys are out 2 weeks Wed on GB Airways & fly back 2 weeks later on Easyjet, which gave my ex-father in-law, who's coming out with them, a heart attack when he got the email notice from them, he thought they'd cancelled the flights at first
