Paphos People

Snce arriving in Peyia last week, everytime we go out, we smell some plant which likens to my garage when the litter tray needs a refill!!

Can anyone tell us what this odour/plant is? or have we not yet accustoimed our olfactory nerve to the Cyprus cats?

Thanks - not really that important but would just like to know.

Chris, are you sure it isn't just the Cyprus cats? There are a lot of them about.

Hiya Chris

I was told it was wild garlic that gives that cat wee smell.
Not sure if thats true though and seeing as I can't even look after artificial plants then maybe Im not the one to respond.Im sure some horticulturally minded bod will be along to confirm or deny this.

We have loads of wild garlic in our garden and that doesn't smell of cat pee. Unless there are different strains of course.

We've got that smell near us (well not literally near us but near our house) Owen kept blaming the cats but as our two are girls and have been 'done' he thought they were attracting boy cats. Are 'boys' and 'girls' the right terms??

We then thought it was the carob trees as there are quite a few near our house. As for garlic then that probably is Owen and I as we put it in everything!!

Hi Chris,

I've been in Paphos for 5 winters now and just notice that "Cat - pee Odour" in the months when there is some moisture about, most prevalant at end of Autumn & start of Winter.

Probably 'piglets' answer is nearer the mark, but someone in the 'Know' will come up with correct name for the plant that is responsible

Some varieties of Broom smell of cat pee, but it could actually be cat pee you are smelling.

Feral cats tend to congregate in particular areas. Around February is a cat mating season and males compete for females. Spraying habitats is a sign of dominance. The males will go where they know there are females, even if they have been spayed, in the hope that they haven't. We had three males sitting on our back wall for a couple of weeks, looking rather confused, recently, and more than a few times have needed the disinfectant. They now appear to have moved on to more fertile pastures.

We have lots of Asphodelus on the surrounding waste ground a tall flower head coming from low dark green leaves-- they stink --could be that. Marj

Ther are 2 types of Asphodel and they have various medicinal qualities, root extract for dermatitis and the tubers for intestinal problems. The flowers are rich in nectar, but if taken indoors give of a strong smell of cats. perhaps they also do outside as well.

Asphodelus aestivus or Common Asphodel Or Fistulosus has star shaped flowers - looks nice but smelly- its a wild flower in CY. I like to know about the wild flowers of CY- spring as a wonderful time . Marj

Hi.

The smell I hate most is the fruit, can't spell it, something like 'Cacafa?' Anyway that's how they say it, it's about the size of a lemon and knobbly, it smells like cat's wee. We have a tree in our garden and he insists on putting the fruit in the fruit bowl in the kitchen.
I was talking one day to my sister-in-law, she English and she said that her husband hates it too so I told my husband that his brother hates it so now the fruit stays outside!

Fortunately there is no fruit on the tree yet. (Could it be Guava? or is that a type of a lizard? )
My mam never said 'CACA' she was Royalty too! See my posting on 'Cypriot neighbours'. I probably would get a whack across the 'lugs' instead!
