It's an interesting topic, and I can see the different sides of the debate.

I voted Yes, but I would qualify that by saying I think it should be focussed more on the country than the monarch specifically.

I have similar feelings about the national anthem.

I think everyone that has a british passport, should swear to protect the country.
and should held accountable if they do anything against the country
failure to do this should mean you are expelled to wales ..

We have young men still being slaughtered in an illegal war, pensioners unable to put on their heating because of the cost, filthy hospitals where you can go in for a minor op and come out with MRSA, streets and whole areas where yob culture have taken over almost completely, the gap between the have's and have not's is wider now than it was when Charles Dickens was writing books, the public services, police fire and ambulance, are going in to meltdown because of lack of funding................................................and this kind of drivel makes the front page of the newspapers.

I voted no because I don't think the monarchy is who they should be Swearing allegiance too :!:

I personally think all school leavers should join the military & Swearing allegiance to their country & whoever is in charge of it at the time :!:

At least that way they'll learn to respect others & not be sat on the dole taking money off those who have worked their whole lives :o

Aren't the monarchy in charge of Britain? Symbolically at least? I don't see anything wrong in having the traditional symbolism. I would hate to see the monarchy go.

It does make me wonder, when none of the nations that make up Great Britain - and yes, I did put the Great in on purpose - can unite, what Gordon Brown thinks this will achieve.

It has become too PC to be united. That needs to be addressed. And when the UK was fighting a war in 1914 - 18 and 1939 - 45 there was no real issue with which part of the UK you came from. They were all fighting for a common cause.

Wales couldn't have survived on it's own. Nor Scotland. Nor England. Nor Northern Ireand. Not even Southern Ireland if it was attacked.

If we were talking about swearing alliegance to Great Britain I would agree. But I think this is too little too late, and the motivator is misguided.
