I went on the Thornton's website and sent some nice choccies and an Easter Egg to Kieran as it was his birthday on Friday. I received an email telling me the delivery date would be on 5th March - last Wednesday. So on Friday I rang Thorntons to say nothing had arrived, and they said it could be up to six days.

To this date nothing has arrived. I don't know where I will stand with them as they could say they left the package and we can't prove that they didn't.

Has anyone else used them, and have you ever had problems with the delivery?

I wanted to use Hotel Chocolat, but they wouldn't accept the address as it didn't match their post codes.

Wouldn't it also be up to them Verity, to prove they have left a package. Surely someone must sign for it.

I sent some to my Mum for Mothers Day, and they arrived fine, but she is always in since she became virtually housebound. The Post Office shouldn't just leave a parcel anyway, they should push a card through the door saying there is a parcel to be collected, which you then have to sign for- ask Thorntons to check this.

No-one has to sign for it. The service that they use will leave it in a porch or a shed if you want them to.

So the driver could say he had left it, and then eat all the chocolates, and how could you prove he hadn't?

I have just sent them an email, and I will ring them at 10 a.m. I rang last week but the guy didn't seem bothered. I suppose he had just woken up.

I will let you know how they handle this. If they handle it well, fair play. If they handle it badly then I won't be using them again.

Keep us informed Verity because we were thinking of using them but if their service is not up to scratch then won't bother.

This is the information in my account on their website. Do you notice anything amiss with the dates?

1/1/1900 12:53:00
Your order for Mr Kieran Spencer has been despatched. Click 5948377121296305 to track your parcel online

1/1/1900 08:23:00
Your order for Mr Kieran Spencer is being processed.

1/1/1900 08:37:00
Order Received.

It also states the delivery date as -

Delivery Date
5/3/2008

Don't know whether they know what they are doing. When I click on the link to the parcel processing company they ask for a tracking number, but Thornton's have not supplied one, so I can't use that service.

I will keep you informed, Trish.

If you paid for it on your Credit card I would inform your credit card company - cos maybe they can do something about it.

The phone lines are supposed to open at 8 a.m. but no-one has answered me yet.

I am a stickler for stuff like this. If a business says it is open at certain times, I expect it to be open. I hate tardiness.

I am going to have a shower, get ready to go out, and if the lines are not open when I ring again woe betide the person on the other end. I am never rude. But I can sure get my point across.

Just need to get the hormones out of my system again this morning.

Verity I can only say from my experience with Thorntons -- delivery has been good. I hope you get it sorted. The customer services were quick to inform me ---after my friend tried to find out who sent the gift---That I hadn't put on a card who the chocs were from-- so they sent me an e mail for me to contact the recipient as they wouldnt tell them I was the sender. So I give them a thumbs up --so lets hope you will do the same and not 2 fingers. Marj

We had a similar experience with Inteflora when a pot rose my daughter ordered for her mum on mother's day was just about dead, a second one sent was just as bad, we eventualy got a full refund.

Sadly Thorntons like many other companys lose the personal touch when they go big time.

Thorntons used to be a family run business on Archer Road Sheffield, I worked at the factory doing GPO maintenance in the 70s and learnt the secret of their toffee; they put in lots of condensed milk.

Peter (Captain) Thornton was the 2IC of my company in the TA before I joined the regular army.

It is unlikey that the family have anything to do with the company now.

Just thought I'd add a little bit of info to the post.

We sent a Bouquet of Flowers to my Step-mum for Mother's Day from Charity Flowers, Guernsey. They didn't arrive on the Saturday as requested. When we phoned their Customer Services on the Monday they couldn't have been nicer and apologised profusely, said they may still arrive but they would send another Bouquet with a letter of apology to my Step-mum.
The original flowers arrived Monday afternoon and the second ones arrived on the Wednesday - both beautiful. The postman said because of the gales the planes weren't flying.
We have used Charity Flowers many times and have never been disappointed. :D :D

I don't use a credit card, Molly, I use a debit card which doesn't usually carry the same protection.

I have been told that the parcel couldn't be delivered because the post code didn't match any of the addresses the courier had. The fact that Kieran's house mate has parcels delivered every other day, and that I send cards, parcels etc via Royal Mail which get there, is another matter. Plus Kieran's friend put the post code in his Sat Nav and pulled up on the drive, no problem.

I have asked for my money back and suggested that they send some chocolates to Kieran by way of apology that he didn't get any for his birthday. I have also expressed annoyance that no-one bothered to let me know there was a problem, and I have had to make four international phone calls to get to the bottom of this.

I have put money into his bank account instead and won't bother using Thornton's Direct again.

Must be me then Kathy. Although if you have never had a problem you won't know how they deal with problems.

As I said, things can go wrong with any company, but it is how they handle it when it goes wrong that matters. They just didn't contact me to let me know there was a problem and in the meantime Kieran's birthday came and went. That is what annoyed me.

By the way - welcome to PaphosPeople as this is your first post. :D

I have had a very nice email from one of the Thornton's customer services ladies. I have given them a second chance to deliver the chocolates and I will give credit where it is due if the chocolates actually arrive this time.

I have given the the location of the house in relation to the nearest pub, so that should help.

Thanks Marj. It is Kieran, not Nathan, who is awaiting the chocolates.

I sent Nathan a parcel from Tesco with chocolates and an Easter Egg in it. But that was mainly because I wanted to send him limescale remover, cleaning agents and bleach to encourage him to sort his flat out.

I have worked on the community and have seen much worse, but it definitely wasn't up to my standards when we stayed there at Christmas. Thankfully it was only one night. I was tempted to buy him a spring clean for his birthday - from a cleaning agency - but I thought that was a bit cruel really. He is just very untidy and doesn't care about dust. I can't say it was dirty, but it just wasn't what he was used to when he lived at home with us. His toilet has limescale so I got him loads of products to tackle it. It must be the nurse in me - can't stand scutty toilets.

I can now nag him from over 2000 miles away and he can't tell me he can't clean up cos he hasn't got any cleaning stuff.

Hi Verity

Hope you get it all sorted out! What really bugs me with my sons is that when they live at home they are dirty and untidy but as soon as they get their own places they get all houseproud. I had hoped that my eldest son having moved back in would retain the better habits he acquired while away, but no such luck.

The most disgusting thing was my younger son some years ago, he didn't like his supper which he was eating in his bedroom in front of the computer, but he knew if I saw him scrape it in the bin I would moan at him (he is allergic to those green things, ie vegetables) so he shovelled it into a carrier bag and put it in a drawer, and promptly forgot about it. For days we wondered what the smell was, until we tracked it down

Anyway i have gone wildly off topic, but am very interested to hear everyone's experiences with long distance mail order as I may well be sending some food parcels to my sons once we make the move.

Cheers

Milly

I am laughing out loud, Milly. Boys eh?

Tesco is good. I will send more parcels to him via Tesco to make sure he eats if he can't find another job in the next month or so.

I am dreading that he might move over here and want to move in with us. He has a different concept of tidy to mine.

I will take your word for it Paul. Having been the only female in our household I am the tidy one. The other three have all been pants!

If you will excuse the pun.

Tricia, that is so funny.

Spoke to Nathan today. He volunteered that the limescale has reduced dramatically in his loo. I am soooo pleased cos it means he has used the products I sent him.

That's it now. No more food parcels. Just bleach and cleaning agents.

The other day my son asked me if Thornton's delivered Easter Eggs and as I remembered this thread I said yes they do but I have heard mixed messages about how good they are, anyway, as his girlfriend lives in Brighton and we are in Herne Bay he decided to go ahead anyway. The egg was booked to be delivered by 3.00pm today, and ....... guess what arrived, zilch, zippo, nada! So that is another strike against Thornton's, they have said they will try to get it delivered on Saturday, so, we'll see.... :(

Cheers

That's interesting Milly, cos Thornton's have not delivered for me either.

I have re-ordered using Hotel Chocolat and the eggs have arrived as promised. I think I will be giving Thornton's on line ordering a miss in future. I now have to wait and see whether they have refunded my money as they promised.

They do deliver to Cyprus - but the costs are prohibitive.

The chocolate is scrummy, though. No complaints from Kieran nor my niece, Vicky.

As for the chocoholics clubbing together for shipping, I'd be up for that but I've already seen around 10 different eggs I'd like for myself, no mind anyone else

Sorry Pete. I wasn't ignoring you. My bloomin' connection to the internet is playing up again.

Digby is hoping to cure it for good in the next couple of weeks, so I am trying to be patient. Not doing a very good job of it though, am I?

When you order those eggs mine have to be gluten free.

Don't you think Kieran is a lucky lad having a lovely Mummy like me to buy his Easter Eggy Weggy from such a scrummy source? Do you think I should stop buying them for him now? He is 25 after all. And my niece is 30!

Nathan had an ordinary one from Tesco with all his cleaning stuff.

He's lucky to have a mummy to buy him any eggs at all, never mind scrummy one's like those

I don't think Jackie will like me spending lots of money on these eggs, as I can't make my mind up which 1 to have & would have to order 3 or 4 for myself, never mind Jackie's :D :D :D

Plus I think I'll need to buy the boys a couple of eggs as they're over next week, so I think its going to be bog standard one's from Carrefour this year :( :( :(
