Having not being able to post over the weekend due to my sick laptop I have recieved the news today (and indeed it was a very brave man that told me).Without warning my laptop has officially died. The hard drive is dead and I have lost everything. I am as sick as the proverbial parrot.

Let this be a lesson to you who don't back up. From now on, unless you want to join me in the state of 'LOST' - back up. I have lost all addresses, photos, absolutely everything.

I am at least lucky insofar as I can use the spare Applemac lap top but finding my way around it is not easy for someone who is used to a PC.

Sorry to read that your computer is no longer.I too had it happen many years ago and even the startup disc was no good.I am sure you will be back to normal self.

That's awfu; - it's all the photos etc. I keep threatening to get an external hard drive to back everything on to - I think you've just convinced me . . . . .

Believe it or not we were in the process of getting an external hard drive to back up! It is all the data, addresses, photos, emails, passwords etc etc...... It is like losing your handbag! You have to start from scratch. Agh...........

The positive note is that it will make me master the Applemac quicker as I have no option!!

I may be wrong but the info on your HDD is never lost unless its low level formatted, so you should be able to unplug it from your laptop & connect it to your new one

Either that or get a hardcase for it & use it as an external drive instead

When a laptop dies, its normally the motherboard battery thats given up the ghost, not the HDD unless its corrupt

Your computer guy should know this but as I said, I might be wrong

I thought that too. But the guy is one of our techies, Andy Hill. I think he knows.

Back up will be a mantra for me from now on. we do it at work hourly but not at home for my personal stuff that goes back 6 years!

If "IT Guy" Andy can't fix it then I'm sorry but it's definitely dead!

I think we have an external hard drive. Well Phil says we do.

Sorry you have lost all your photos and addresses. How sad. Technology isn't everything, is it? Those photograph albums of the past still have some appeal to me.

So if I take the HDD out of my laptop & put it in another laptop, it wouldn't work

I always thought the information on a HDD is the same as a memstick & doesnt deteriate unless corrupted

I supose this is one of those things that you think will never happen to you.

Brian backs up everything all the time - he drives me mad with it - but our PC is on it's last legs, it is over 5 years old, very old for a computer, and I would hate to loose everything. You just take them for granted I guess.

Anyway we ordered a laptop over Easter, should get it tomorrow, so when this old dog finally packs in we should be OK.

Hope you manage to salvage something Tiggy.
