As the subject suggests, this has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Cyprus but I have noticed that there are lots of people on PP that seem to be guys with military service under their belts.

I have been researching my family history for what seems like ages now, but my one relative who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He was awarded the Victory, the British and the 14 Star and apparently these were sent on to his father in 1920.

Does anyone know if you are able to retrieve their "file" if you like, to discover what campaigns he had been involved in or exactly how he died etc? I know that he was with the Northumberland Fusiliers, 26th (Service) Batallion (3rd Tyneside Irish).

Formed at Newcastle, 14 October 1914, by the Lord Mayor and City.
June 1915 : attached to 103rd Brigade, 34th Division.
3 February 1918 : disbanded in France.

Fingers crossed.

If you have your relatives service number you should be able to look up his details on the MoD website.

Hi Ann,

Try the War Graves Commission website , just enter name and it will search for your relatives details. It's free to access.

Happy hunting.

Thanks all.

Verity ~ Thanks for the link, I was able to trace that he is "remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial". It even gives the reference numbers etc for if we get to go there in the future.

I also managed to find his namesake who was killed in action in 1944.

I haven't got his military service number and don't know how to find it but I shall keep going.

Thanks again x

Hi
Try http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk as they have the service records of people who fought in the Great War. You may have to pay for a download but the search is free.
Best regards
Vanessa
