Post subject:  Social Events

It has already been mentioned on another topic, but I think the idea of arranging a beach weekend in the North is ace. We could turn it into an event, if we get enough interest, with activities for kids and big kids. :D

Can I suggest a sunset cruise as another social event for some time in the year?

Or maybe a walk down the Caledonian falls in the Troodos either before or after lunch?

It is often difficult to try to think of things to do to entertain visitors when they come over, and if any events are on when you have visitors it will be something to occupy them. As there will be members of differing ages and mobility I am sure that some events may be more suitable to some than others. But there should be something for everyone over the course of the year.

If the social events take off we will be needing a social secretary to co-ordinate.

What do other members think?

Sounds like a plan Verity, are you volunteering your services as Secretary

If not, then I know someone who would be very good at the job too

Hi Verity
I think its a great idea.
I was already planning a Taverna club for
our members , as it seems many of us share
the liking for tavernas , and taverna food ..
but thats another matter.

Yes I think the paphospeople community should have a social Sec..

Any suggestions ? or offers ?

Well, there is no letting the grass grow under the feet of Admin on this site, is there? I only said that I would be happy to take responsibility for organising events if they were suggested and look what happened. It is in black and white above my Avatar.

So now it is down to the members. Let me know if you have any ideas and I will be happy to try to make them happen if there is enough interest.

ok..

I have been toying with the idea of a taverna club
I know that there are others already interested in this.

where we form a club (any member can join) who is interested.
then say,,, once a month ,or bi-monthly we all get together
and go out for a meal at a taverna, changing venues each time..
though venues would be aggreed in advance ..

there are so many nice tavernas in the villages , we would never run out of places to go..
then someone could write a review on each one.

tell me your thoughts ??

Don't start. I do have a life, too you know.

I am too young to be Marj Proops or Claire Raynor. JYou will need to find someone older and wiser.

Watch this space. It will happen - just give us chance to set it up.

I am happy to receive any suggestions for tavernas that you would like to include in the Taverna club and I have been toying with the idea of drawing up a schedule for the year so that people can put them onto their calendars.

Hopefully some of our non-Cypriot resident members will be able to join us if any of the dates co-incide with holidays.

Woo Whoo !
Glad this is getting of the ground..

let me start..

Konia taverna
mandria taverna
stroumpi taverna
the one near the paphos town hall (dont know the name)

thats just a start :D

George's at Mandria, or the one opposite? Stroumpi taverna - is that the one owned by Brits or is there an authentic one? If you want authentic there is Dionysos at Stroumpi which is mainly frequented by Cypriots and is quite basic. Arouzos in Kathikas on a Saturday afternoon is a good one, too.

We can try them all over the course of the next year.

Any suggestions considered - I am happy to go with the flow.

the mandria one that I tried was on the right
as you drove into the village ..

I dont know the others, but I am happy to try any

That is George's. We could always do both. Not on the same night, of course. Unless folks are VERY hungry. :D

I also like the idea of a trip to the beach huts
for a weekend, we can arrange it later in the year
that is also suitable for people with kiddies ..

I am excited about that one too, Neil. I love the look of the beaches in the North. I am going in May for three nights, and I am not adverse to nipping across the border for lunch with a girlfriend either. It is so easy to get to and feels like you are in a different country.

I know there is controversy because of the political aspect, but people are people, and the people I have met over there have been really lovely. Politics will always be with us.

Must recommend Pericles Taverna in Nata. We tried dozens of tavernas and rate Pericles as the best on our (East) side of Paphos: friendly effusive welcome from Pericles and his lovely wife every time, beautifully cooked fresh food...and always a wide range. Reasonable prices too. The bonus is the size of the taverna, which can cater for hundreds if need be, so plenty of room for all the members as the forum grows. Just my suggestion...and I'm sure anyone who has been to Pericles for their fabulous Sunday lunch will endorse. Lloyd

Cheers Lloyd , I have not tried that one..

Some excellent ideas here - loving the taverna club concept, there's loads of places I've heard about but never tried and it's always nice to go in a decent group.

The trip to the North could be cracking as well - we've still never been so would welcome having some "experienced" old heads for hints and tips the first time!

Well done Verity for "volunteering" for social secretary! :D

I have done the 3 day cruise, it was ok..
but a bit full on ..

but it is an option

Author:  Neil [ Thu Jan 17, 2008 12:46 pm ]
Post subject:

I cant help with price, I went 6 years ago.
but the format is still the same.
I went with louis cruise.
get on boat at lunch time limassoll
over night trip to port siad
The boat trip was fine , good food entertainment etc,etc ,

The bit that was hard work was , you got on a bus from port siad
at 7.30 in the morning, its 4 hour bus trip to cairo, then they herd you around the museaim, then back on the coach drop you of at the pyramids , stay 1 hour, back on the bus, drop you of at paper making venu , back on bus drop you of at place for lunch, back on bus , take to another friends souviner shop, back on bus 4 hours back to boat, port siad , just in time for evening meal.
travel back by boat overnight to limassoll

but dont let me put you off  joking ..

It was a bit much for me but ... its only my opinion

Post subject:

We did the same trip as Neil also about 6 years ago and agree with everything he's said - a great experience to see the pyramids etc but have to say the whole trip left me feeling quite exhausted !!

Think this social club idea is brilliant - would be great if there was something when we are there 2nd half of May - it would be good to have a chance to meet up with those of you who already live there.

Hi Julie,

Welcome to PaphosPeople :D

Once our Social Secretary 'Verity' has planned out the Taverna Club schedule, eveyone will be able to see where & when we'll be meeting, also on top of that, we'll be having other events, so keep an eye out for any events around the time of your trip

It would be good to meet some of our non Cyprus members when they're over here on holiday too :)

Always good to have ideas put forward Frank. And welcome to PP - glad you found the site.

I leave the planning of the forum layout to Pete cos I don't want to have to think too much about anything, but I am sure that he will set something up if it is feasible.

PP will always be open to ideas from members. Please don't be shy in putting them forward folks.

Welcome to all new members & thank you for joining our forum, as Verity says, we invite all idea's, new or old for our forum, so don't be affraid to put it forward, as you never know, it might just happen here :D

Just to keep you all up to date on what's happening with the forum, as our site grows, we'll be adding new forums & probably removing those that member don't use, we're also trying to get a chat room up & running, so members across the world can chat to each other in real time, thats in the hands of our techies as we speak, it'll be open to all registered members, & will be moderated iaw our T&C's.. so keep your eyes our for the announcement soon I hope

As we started this forum for the members & its the members that make a forum, then we normally leave the decisions to the members, as in the 'Charity Donations' sticky, we've listed a few charities around the area to which we'd like our members to decide which charity we'll be donating a percentage of our sponsorship & advertising revenue too.. so please make that vote & at our launch party on the 31st Jan, in the George & Dragon, we'll be announcing which charity it will be... but its down to you guys/gurls to make that choice for us

As to your idea's, well I keep a list of them & at the next meeting, we all discuss each idea in turn & if we think its a good idea, you'll see it happen :) So I hope everyone keeps the idea's coming or our meetings will be very boring & it'll mean we'll have to drink more  only kidding :)
