There are around 25,000 unpaid fines for violations committed by tourists in Z vehicles, including cars, motorcycles and buggies.

In the update published today by Phileleftheros, Karousos said that often tourists are not even booked by police as it is generally believed that there is no point because in many cases fines are not settled.

“Our bill aims among other to put an end to this message transmitted to tourists. The responsibility for holding liable those renting a ‘Z’ car and then get fined will be shared with vehicle rental companies.

“Each company will need to ensure that their customer will pay the fine, for example by withholding an amount on her credit card for a certain period of time like many rental companies do for damages to the vehicle. The new bill stipulates that if the fine doesn’t get paid, the responsibility is transferred to the one who rented out the vehicle,” Karousos noted.

Some Rental Companies already ask for credit card details, in case of damage found on the vehicle (after the hirer has left).
Sensible customers will insist on handing a vehicle back to the Company after they have physically checked it over and had their credit card cleared of any further charges (lest a fraudulent claim is subsequently made ).
If any 'Traffic Fines' are given .. I hope the Police have evidential proof ... as not all hire-car renters will just 'pay up' without a fight in Court ( if they think the fine is unwarranted) !
That would not be something any Tourist Destination would want to be put on International Media :pow

Similar to the technology used in the 'out and about' sms and reply systems, its very possible for a point of booking fine to be immediately transmitted to a rental company and the driver instantaneously. As the vast majority are fixed penalties a passport can be immediately blocked for use at an airport unless the fine is paid.

Ah so maybe there is a way big brother watching you can make money!!!

Cyprus need only to talk with Crete on how to deal with this problem.

We were amazed by the coordination between the police & car rental companies, 21st.century reporting & tracking technology employed in each vehicle.

Getting past the security at the airport would be a non-starter if you hadn't cleared your fine(s)!
