W.E.F 7pm on Friday night, Sunshine Radio (Paphos) will stop transmission.
They say it's because their 7 years broadcast contract has expired

Noooooo, that leaves nothing worth listening to as we cannot receive BFBS until we get nearer to Aphrodite Hills.

Looks like it will be Absolute 80s over the internet from now on and silence in the car. :(

Try Kiss FM - 89.00 - 88.5 Greek language but music ok.

Can't really quantify why, but don't get on with Kiss and don't enjoy listening to Rock FM.

If Sunshine goes, something will pop up in its place. Mind you, it was never the same after Simone left. :-(

Mmmmm,i,m no broadcaster but i would be more inclined to listening to a radio station with more talk about local events and news. Its a fact that the vast majority of listeners to radio stations and the readers of newspapers want to here BAD news....disagree??????
Which article would you like to read and you had the choice......

Brad Pitt is earning 10 million for his next film...or

Brad Pitt involved in scandal with well known actress

C,mon be honest.

I hope that they manage to come back
We have listened from day 1

I can,t help but wonder if backing money has dried up
Which won,t be helped by businesses not spending as much on advertising through these covid times
They will be missed ...lots of people listened in the uk as well as here

Frankly don't want to hear anything about Brad Pitt of krudashiuns, to me the are all empty vessels being rattled for money, vacuous parasites!

The music channels are usually full of repetition of the same soulless humdrum kak with older or classical tunes labelled as specialities.

There is no talk radio here but would certainly give one a go by listening.

From what I understand it was failing for a while especially you know who ended up in the big hotel in Nicosia, but either way sad that it has gone..

Radio stations rely on advertising revenue

Businesses right now because of covid cannot afford the advertising outlays

So revenue to pay the wages and to keep the station license going will have dropped

Sadly backers will only continue to back...if they are making money on their investments

Sorry but you are wrong MigMogs - Sunshine's license has expired NOT their advertising revenue!

From their facebook page:-

"In case you have not heard already, Sunshine Radio 90.8 FM will be closing down on Friday, July 3rd at 6pm.
The licence to broadcast to Paphos was awarded to Sunshine Radio on July 3rd 2013. How time flies....!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your love and support.
For the time being, the team at Sunshine Radio would like to say good bye and send out their best wishes!"

Several posters mentioned a 'talk' station. These are expensive to setup as you need to employ the right talent. Love him or hate him the Nick Ferrari's of this world do not work for Euro 800 pm! (and you would require enough Nick's to carry you through the day & night). Also from a business point of view I personally think a 'talk' format would not work here in CY but does work in a major city like London. The business model of most all 'commercial' stations is to drive customers or clients to the advertisers. Together with the musical format and one would hope the presenters' personality it's the overall entertainment that achieves that.

It's obviously geared towards the military, but BFBS ticks the talk radio boxes.

Effsie, Not much in the way of audience participation is there? Just the BBC pushing their agenda as normal. What's worse the Beeb or Sky News?

A lot of people, particularly those from a military family, enjoy listening to BFBS. The "agenda" is to support the armed forces.

You have an interesting tone in your posts for a new member, Have you been on this forum before, under a different name?

Hi Effsie,

I have been registered with the very same username on the forum for several years but am more of a lurker and post only when I feel I have something to add.

I'm aware that BFBS broadcasts primarily to the military and their families. However, as I'm sure you know it is not a commercial station and is funded indirectly by the UK tax payer. For this reason it cannot be compared to the majority of stations in CY who have to consider very carefully their expenses v's advertising income including their programming content. It is not inexpensive running a radio station.

Regards

Broadcaster, are you aware of or do you know if anything will be replacing Sunshine radio in Paphos?

Hi Daz,

I'm afraid I don't. I was only able to listen to them online due to being outside their signal area.

Do you work for a station? Your name rings a bell.

No plans as such just now, Dave's new station is purely for the Limassol area at the moment and online but you never know.....! These radio licenses are pesky things to obtain apparently!
