Post subject:  What is going on with GESY?

Someone I know in Paphos has launched a Go Fund Me page for some one who has breast cancer. They say that they have already had a masectomy and chemo for which they have paid but they are now faced with a bill for 12K Euros for 15 rounds of radiotherapy. As far as I am aware they have lived in Cyprus for 10 years and are legal residents.

I do hope this does not mean that residents cannot get the treatment they require. I have to say that when we lived in Paphos my husband had excellent treatment for his melanoma and did not cost us a cent - even down to the cancer nurses who visited him on a daily basis when he was home in between hospital stays in Nicosia.

Is cancer treatment a problem now?

I don't know Vine! It just popped up on my facebook as a Go Fund Me and I know them. All it said was that GESY would not fund them.

Something doesn't sound right...more information is needed I think. Can you give a link to the page?

Who 'financed' the original mastectomy and chemo?

This is from the GESY web https://www.gesy.org.cy/sites/Sites?d=Desktop&locale=en_US&lookuphost=/en-us/&lookuppage=hiospecialistseligibility

I am following this with interest...because I always thought that chronic ongoing conditions eg cancer , heart issues, strokes etc where funded by GESY

It is worrying to think that it isn’t

From my previous post and link, GESY does offer the services required.

As far as I am aware, The (German) hospital is not part of GESY it is private and is only a couple of years old https://www.goc.com.cy/

From their site..quote:- "A Private Hospital, Category Polyclinic, was licensed under the name "German Oncology Center", and these offered specialties are Radiology, Radiotherapy Oncology, Pathological Oncology and Nuclear Medicine."

For the avoidance of doubt, I am not suggesting (as a PM has indicated) there is any type of ‘scam’ going on or that I am on a 'witch hunt'. I am merely trying to understand the ‘chain of events’ that has led to GESY apparently saying they are ‘not being able to help’

I like many others have concerns that GESY is not fulfilling its purpose.
Before GESY, Oncology treatments were available for ‘residents’ holding a Cyprus Health card. I BELIEVE the services were offered at the General hospital in Nicosia.

My husband and myself have been allocated 150 euros of healthcare provision between us from my S1 to last 12 months. Think it is allocated January to January

So far this year we have used 50 euros of this allotted money, mostly on medications....my husband has been charged recently for seeing consultant for skin cancer...and has been charged for biopsy results and will be charged for operation to remove cancerous growth

So 100 Euros left for drs visits, specialists, treatments, bloods and medicines before we start to have to pay out full prices?

We both have chronic conditions

How this 150 Euros money would work out if we needed expensive Cancer treatments we don,t know

Hence why I am following...as feeling concerned

And yes I was also of the opinion that all Cancer care came from Nicosia General Hospital

Migmogs - each person (except for a low income category) is liable to pay up to €150 per annum for certain items. If you go over that timit then there is no further cost. I do not know about items that are not in the list. I have copied the relevant section from GESY website:

''2. Co-Payments and Personal Contribution I and II
Wherever applicable, the beneficiaries, upon receiving healthcare services, will pay directly to the providers for the services they receive:

A. Co-Payment
This is an international best practice aiming at creating a responsible behaviour on behalf of the patients and healthcare providers and preventing abuse of the services offered. For the healthcare services that a co-payment is applied, the beneficiary will pay directly to the healthcare providers the set amount, which will constitute part of the providers’ fee.

The healthcare service for which a co-payment will be paid and the amount of the said co-payment are set out in the table below:

Healthcare Services (Note 1)
Amount of Co-Payment
€ (euros)
Per pharmaceutical product 1.00
Per medical device or medical supplies 1.00
Per lab test or group of lab tests * (note 2) 1.00
Per visit to a nurse or midwife 6.00
Per healthcare service performed by a specialist doctor in radiology/diagnostic radiology 10.00
Per visit to allied health professionals 10.00
Per visit to a hospital to receive healthcare services in cases of accidents and emergencies 10.00
Note 1: No co-payment is paid in cases where the healthcare services are provided within the context of inpatient healthcare.
Note 2: The total maximum charge per category of lab tests is ten euro (€ 10)

A maximum annual amount of co-payments will be set for each beneficiary in order to protect vulnerable groups (e.g. low income persons and/or persons with increased needs in medical care) and safeguard unhindered access of the population to the necessary healthcare services.
The maximum annual amount of co-payments will be € 75 for the recipients of the Guaranteed Minimum Income, the low- income pensioners and children up to the age of 21, and € 150 for the rest of the population''.

It is €150 per individual.

I checked the German Oncology Centre on GESY and there are six Radiation Oncology Specialist Doctors there registered under GESY.

However, just because a treatment is available in Cyprus doesn't necessarily mean it is covered by GESY.

Here is the reply to an email I sent this morning

"Dear Sir/Madame,

We would like to inform you that the maximum annual amount of co-payments is € 75 only for the recipients of the Guaranteed Minimum Income, the low- income pensioners and children up to the age of 21. For the rest of the population the maximum annual amount of co-payments is € 150.

The maximum annual amount of co-payments is set for each beneficiary in order to protect vulnerable groups (e.g. low income persons and/or persons with increased needs in medical care) and safeguard unhindered access of the population to the necessary healthcare services.

When you reach this maximum amount you will continue receive healthcare services within GHS without paying any additional co-payments.

Kindly note that regarding operations, since the doctor and the clinic have been registered to GHS, then the beneficiary will not pay any amount.

Thank you for contacting us, we remain at your disposal."

There may be 6 doctors registered but if THE HOSPITAL isn't, the Doctors consultations etc would be covered by GESY HOWEVER the Hospital procedures would have to be paid for at full price.
