Message from The Haris Tavern Attachment: Danny.jpg Our friend and yours, Danny Jones, will be laid to rest at Peyia Cemetery at 11am. He was Haris Bars best Social Butterfly, a True Gent, loved by all of us who knew him, more so his fellow Pool Team & Darts Team friends a million times over. But a true Champion in their eyes and ours. We will all join Carol, Graham & family at Danny’s favourite watering hole here at Haris Bar Tavern after the service at Peyia Cemetery. There will be food provided and also music provided by DJ Paul, which was requested by Carol & Graham because Danny was a massive lover of all kinds of music. A little note regarding social distancing rules. Please be aware we are not out of the woods regarding the Governments Guidelines. So please do not all try to cram into one or two areas, there is plenty space, if outside is full to capacity, then people will be asked to sit in the restaurant, or the inside bar area. No sitting at the outside bar, it is not allowed. None of us want a fine. Please be kind and courteous to all our staff members, they will do their very best to serve you quickly and efficiently as possible. Thank you all Savvas & The Haris Team |

His string vest adorns his cross in the Cemetry. Not what I want to see when I visit my late wife's grave. Have people NO respect for others feelings. Alan |

Alan Straight back at you......He was known for his yellow string vest by everyone who knew him ... have YOU no respect for others feelings? People show their grief and love / affection in many ways. What about people who leave photographs or families who leave toys that belonged to a deceased child..you want them removed as well? I am sorry for you loss and you must feel free to grieve in your own way, but so must others |

I have to agree with Alan here. There are many ways of showing respect but I don't think that adorning a cross on a grave with a string vest is one. Many people visit that cemetery like Alan and if it upsets him it possibly upsets others and although I am sure that would not be the intention it has caused upset.Maybe it is us older ones who feel this way. |

Poppytim Thanks for your support. Whilst the placing of the items Dave has mentioned is generally acceptable, I cannot agree that an item of a persons underwear on a crosss in a cemetery is. You are quite correct, the majority of burials in the cemetery are for spouses, most of them in their 60s, 70s and 80s, which would equate to those remaining are of a similar age. Being without your partner after 40, 50 or 60 years of marriage is very difficult but we put on a brave face and try telling the world that we are coping, when, in reality, our lives are empty. To many of us bereaved spouses, going to the cemetery is a huge part of our lives and whilst I can't speak for anyone else, I'm sure that a lot of Ladies will be upset when they see the string vest underwear on a on a cross on a grave close to their partners. Thanks again Alan |

Wow, I cannot believe what I have just read. There is a family and a LOT of friends grieving for this kind, loving man. How is a vest, which was his signature piece of clothing in any way offensive? |

Boo wrote: How is a vest, which was his signature piece of clothing in any way offensive? It seems that people offended by this are the older generation when a vest was worn under a shirt which is probably why Alan classes it as underwear but now a days it is worn as a normal item of clothing instead of a shirt / t shirt. |

Alan I am so sorry that you are still grieving and I can only hope that the sadness will lessen in time. I hope you still have your dog who I am sure is a comfort to you. |

Most cemeteries have rules on what can and cannot be left on graves. I didn't know the gentleman who died but can understand that his vest was his signature piece of clothing and that is how his friends remember him. That said, I also do not believe that the correct place to display it is on a cross in a cemetery. Maybe it could be framed and kept in his favourite bar, when it would remain among friends. Whatever anyone's feeling are, it has clearly already caused offence where it is so, out of respect for all those who regularly visit the cemetery, my thoughts are that it should not remain there, especially as it has a greater chance of disappearing from its current location. Many years ago in the UK we lost a young daughter and were not allowed even to place her favourite toy on the grave, so I do understand both sides of this. My condolences to his family and friends. |

So why do people leave items on graves I thought if anyone would have some insight into this practice it would be someone here but let me tell you about my experience. Up to the age of 9/10 I grew up literally right next door to a very large cemetery, as a kid, it was a huge playground to me much to my parents disapproval, so I may have spent more time in cemeteries than most normal people. A few of my relatives are now buried in that cemetery, when I can I go to that place to pay my respects, I noticed there began to appear collections of small objects on grave stones, things like small toys, coins, and other knick knacks, a couple a graves from where my dad is buried there is a grave with 2 unopened beer cans with a card saying cheers mate, I had to smile. As long as it is not tacky then what harm is there, after a few months our local cemetery maintenance team removes the items so no harm done, however if they are left for long periods then it will look a mess and that is not good. |

I didn’t know this young guy but my thoughts are with his family and many friends at this time. I don’t have a view either way as to whether it is appropriate but would have thought it would be a better idea to have his signature garment hung behind glass in a corner of the bar where most people knew him - that way, people will continue to share memories of him and perhaps offer a toast on special occasions. Unfortunately, I would imagine that only close family and friends will visit the cemetery and will have their own memories. In the sun and with the elements the vest will soon disintegrate and not give the comfort for which it was intended. If he was my friend/relative I would move it now while it still has some meaning. Just one more point of view and not intended to upset anyone. |

I have no idea who left the (lets say) 'tribute' there, it could be friend or family, but wouldn't it have been more appropriate to have interred such an item with him rather than exhibiting it in a flag over the stone. Although I am a very open minded person and accepting of many things I think that places of remembrance should be kept limited to only certain items. If it is allowed to get out of hand then there may be flags and emblems of all types of 'inappropriate material' and moments that hurt others. |
