Post subject: | Driving in from UK via Turkey |
I have a client who about a year ago took the opportunity to have a great adventure after buying here. They drove from UK, through many places in Europe then took the ferry from Turkey mainland to Kyrenia, then across the border at Nicosia to the South. The car has UK plates on and the UK MOT has expired. She hasn't moved it for 6 months as she is outside of the country but wants to register it here. Does anyone have any advice on the best way or if possible to register after coming from the North.... |

It must be about 10 years ago now when our neighbours decided to bring their car over from the UK,driving through Turkey and ferry to Kyrenia etc.A few days later he was stopped by Police in Paphos who impounded the car and said what they had done was illegal. I can't remember what happened in the end but it was a horrible experience for them! |

Seven or eight years ago we imported a car into the south from the UK. We drove it on uk plates for nearly six months which is permitted, we then decided to take a trip to the North, no problem, but as we crossed back to the south border police rushed out of the office to challenge us about bringing a uk car in from the north. Fortunately we had all the import documents with us to prove we weren't bringing it in through an illegal port of entry and they happily waved us on. Can't imagine the situation has changed, so really wouldn't recommend it. Regards |

I think the most relevant point here is " from Turkey or northern Cyprus to the south" , my advise dont do it, if you can obtain the correct paperwork to satisfy customs it will be complicated and expensive. |

Not sure if it's still running due to Covid but there was a Ro Ro ferry from Greece to Cyprus It used to be the MV Alexo (Ro Ro ferry) http://www.salamisshipping.com/en/shipping-services-in-cyprus/guarantee291 |

You cannot register a car here if it has entered the Republic through an illegal port, i.e. anywhere in the North of the island. The only way to do it would be to take it back across to the North, back on the ferry to Turkey and then drive somewhere that it can be loaded onto a ferry to take it to Limassol. Realistically, all she can do is scrap it as she will never be able to register it here and even trying to could open her up to a world of legal pain. |
