Police used water cannon on Saturday afternoon during a protest in the Nicosia town centre against corruption, and the way the government is managing the pandemic.

The demonstration started at around 4pm at the Kolokasis park, in the old part of Nicosia but tensions rose when police called on the protesters to disburse citing the ban on gatherings due to the pandemic.

Protesters report police violence and the use of tear gas on some occasions. Water cannon was used on protesters on Makarios avenue.

An eyewitness told the Cyprus Mail six people were arrested while there have been altercations between police officers.

Initially police stopped the protesters from marching to Eleftheria square, the eyewitness said, but later allowed them to proceed.

“I don’t know what they are planning on doing although some officers told me that they would probably issue fines.” She added that everyone was wearing face masks.

Bravo for the people of Cyprus having the desire and sufficient feeling to protest.

Now is not the time for demonstrations of any kind!
We are in a pandemic

Although I have read that all attendees wore masks and where peaceful
And that the police where heavy handed and the videos I have watched where indeed quite brutal

It has been said quite loudly and covered in the media ...especially after the attacks on the police and the destruction of people’s properties in Limassol earlier this year....that public demonstrations are unacceptable right now and would not be tolerated

Maybe the organizers could have looked at a better and safer way to get their points across instead of breaking the law

Totally agree with you, but that was nothing compared to what may come in the future if the World Economic Forum get their way!
