| Post subject: | International Driving Licence |
Good morning all, just a query, I understand that I will have to exchange my UK driving licence to a Cypriot one soon, as I live here and because of Brexit rules. I don't want to exchange my UK licence as we will be returning to the UK early next year. My question is Can I get an international driving licence here in Cyprus and drive on that until we leave, or do I just give up driving until we leave. Thanks all. |

You can still use your UK license till 21 July after that you have to have a Cypriot one or an International one the problem is:- Since 1 February 2019, motorists can only get a permit by personally visiting one of the 2,500 post offices that will offer the service. The Department of Transport will then issue the permit via the post office. Prior to 1 February, you could get an IDP by mail order from the AA and the RAC, and from 89 post offices in person. To complete the order you have to be over 18 years old and have the following with you: Your full UK driving licence - photo card or older paper version licence A passport-sized photo Your passport if you're presenting an older paper version license £5.50 application fee. https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/new-and ... ing-permit |

Can you not just change your licence for a Cyprus one and then change it back when you return to the UK? |

Hi Effsie, yes I can do that, in fact if I change my UK licence to a Cypriot one here, I can drive on the Cypriot licence for a year in the UK before having to change back to a UK licence. But that wasn't my question, it's purely based on because we don't know for sure when we can go back, maybe in a month or two, maybe six months time who knows, because of our situation. I just wanted some insight if I could get an international licence here to cover me when the change comes, and in doing so keep my UK licence. Apparently not though, it looks like I will have to change it for a Cypriot licence then back again in what could be in a very short space of time, which I was looking to avoid. Thanks all. |

avrilathehun I could easily be talking a load of rubbish and it might not be within their remit but you could TRY the Transport Dept or the Citizens Centre, explain the situation and ask if they could give you a 6 month 'extension' Nothing to lose by asking..just a thought |

Do be careful when changing to a Cypriot license - yes it us fairly easy to do and easy to get the UK license back when you return to the UK BUT it is exceptionally difficult to get reasonable insurance on your return, Many insurances will not insure you at all and those that do are not cheap! I don't know why this is. I was with Abbey Gate and had a letter confirming my no claims discount. but to no avail. |
