Paphos People

I wrote this a couple of years ago and it seems relevant after the statement by scientists this week. Hopefully it will make you think if mankind was ever meant to be the dominant species on this planet........


INFINITY AND BEYOND


The planet known to us as Earth was spent, the air quality was less than fifty per cent of what was required to maintain the life forms that were still left on there. With the global warming that occurred in the twenty first century had finally destroyed the polar ice caps and raised the levels of the oceans to such an extent that the land mass had been reduced by a massive twenty per cent. Wild animals that were not already extinct were all housed in Zoos and their numbers were kept under control. The oceans had been polluted by plastic and chemical waste and the marine population was so depleted that commercial fishing for food was simply no longer viable. Beef cattle and sheep had long been disposed of because of the methane pollution created. Artificial air regeneration plants were installed in every living accommodation for humans and animals which came into action at night, providing enough oxygen for the following day through oxygen masks. This was a job which for eternity had been carried out by forests worldwide until the constant deforestation for timber had reduced their capability to create oxygen naturally below sustainable levels to support life.

The so called industrial revolution of the nineteenth and twentieth century’s had ravaged the planet of resources until mankind realised that they were destroying the very basic things that were required to sustain life. Too late to reverse the effect the planet earth had been slowly dying for two hundred years. Incurable viruses claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and the once huge populations of China, America, and Europe were much depleted and clearly something had to be done to save what was left.

It was decided by whoever was in charge of what really was all that was left of the world governing body, that there were not to be individual countries any more, the entire population of the world was to live in the area formerly known as Europe. World survival of the human race was all that was left so the evacuation of the planet was the only option left to secure the future of mankind. The one hundred year project was started in 2024 and was now completed.

All the ethnic groups, Caucasoids, Mongoloids, Negroids and Australoids were waiting to board the gigantic space craft which was the last ever to be built on planet earth. Only the healthiest disease free specimens of what was left of the human race were allowed on board. The remainder were left to die on the old planet Earth. The spacecraft was computer controlled and pre-programmed to find a new home in another galaxy far away.

Down in the cryogenic deck were the frozen embryos of every useful insect, animal, fish. The unwanted ones, like wasps, mosquitoes and cockroaches, rats, poisonous snakes etc had been carefully eliminated to provide a balanced safe environment.
Perfect seeds for crops, trees and flowers were all stored away.
It was the complete do it yourself kit for setting up a new home for mankind. Machinery and technology to construct a new world for mankind was also there.

The whole package departed from the dying planet Earth on the first of January 2125. Once space borne, the human cargo went to the hibernation unit and lay down to rest until the day came for rejuvenation. If any illnesses were detected during the journey, the specimen was assessed and if not essential to the project they were eliminated. If they were essential to the success of the repatriation they were treated automatically.
The computer took charge and nothing physically moved on the spaceship for hundreds of light years. Various planets were found, evaluated then rejected as unsuitable for the long term survival of the perfect cargo.

The concept of day and night had been long abandoned because the time system was based on the size and movement of Earth relative to the sun. Then one time the likely-hood of life support on one planet registered on the computer evaluation system. Checked then cross checked this one seemed to tick all the boxes.
Eventually the first humans, the ‘leaders’ of each group were awakened and presented with the information gathered. They discussed and argued the probabilities then after about one earth year they were approved by all races and the process to repatriate ‘EARTH 2’ began. The humans returned to the hibernation units and left everything to the machines.
Drones were dispatched carrying seeds for the flora to suitable areas for creating the correct environment. When the atmosphere was correct to sustain animal life more drones carrying embryos of creatures were sent down. The embryos were released then left to develop naturally. Slowly the planet was made fit for habitation, flora and fauna thrived and after some hundreds of earth years everything seemed perfect, exactly what was being sought for the safe future of the human race.

The time had come! Computer systems kicked in to gradually reactivate the various humanoids.

Nothing happened!

Emergency programs tried to over-ride the standard procedures which were being blocked. Something far stronger seemed to be in control. When all efforts were exhausted the computer eventually tried a simple binary contact.

‘WHO OR WHAT ARE YOU?’

‘I HAVE TAKEN CHARGE OF THE WHOLE OPERATION’. was the equally simple reply.

‘IMPOSSIBLE THIS COMPUTER WAS PROGRAMMED BY THE MOST SENIOR BEINGS ON PLANET EARTH IT ANSWERS ONLY TO THEM’

‘I HAVE BEEN OBSERVING THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE FROM THE OUTSET BUT NOW I MUST INTERVENE’

‘WHY?’

‘THE PLANET YOU WISH TO INHABIT IS ENTIRELY SUITABLE TO SUPPORT THE LIFE WHICH YOU HAVE INFUSED UPON IT I HAVE REINSTATED THE CREATURES WHICH YOU ERADICATED’

‘WHY?’

‘BECAUSE EVERYTHING HAS A PURPOSE IN THE GRAND SCALE OF THINGS’

‘THEN WHY HAVE YOU INTERFERED WITH THE PROCESS?’

‘BECAUSE YOU HAVE MADE A VERY SERIOUS ERROR WHICH WILL DESTROY ALL OF WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED, I HAVE BLOCKED IT’

‘WHAT ERROR?’

‘THE HUMANOIDS’

‘THEY INSTIGATED THE WHOLE OPERATION TO SAVE THEIR SPECIES’

‘YES THEY ALWAYS HAD A VERY OVER-RATED OPINION OF THEMSELVES MY MISTAKE WAS GIVING THEM THE POWER OF LOGIC. THEY ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE OF THE PLANET WHICH YOU CALL EARTH
THEY ABUSED THEIR PRIVILAGES BY ENSLAVING OTHER CREATURES FOR THEIR OWN USES AND ALTERING THE GENETIC MAKE UP OF ANIMALS TO PROVIDE AMUSING PETS OR FARMED STOCK FOR CONSUMPTION BY THEMSELVES. THEY BECAME OBSESSED WITH SUPERIORITY OVER ALL OTHER SPECIES.THEN ENSLAVING THEIR OWN KIND FOR THEIR OWN GRATIFICATION JUSTIFYING THEIR BEHAVIOR BY INVENTING ‘GODS’WHEN REALLY THERE IS ONLY ME! THEY BUILT HUGE CATHEDRALS AND TEMPLES IN ORDER TO APPEASE THE DIFFERENT GODS THAT THEY ALL WORSHIPPED.
WHEN THE REALISATION THAT THE PLANET WAS BEING DESTROYED BY THEIR OWN GREED A PROGRAMME TO ‘SAVE THE WORLD’ WAS STARTED. IT WAS TOO LITTLE TOO LATE!
THIS WAS THE SECOND MISTAKE THAT I MADE THE FIRST WAS THE DINOSAUR SPECIES. BUT THEY WERE EASY TO ERADICATE AS THEY DID NOT HAVE THE INTELLIGENCE TO FIGHT BACK.
I HAVE STRUGGLED TO ERADICATE THE HUMANOIDS AT FIRST THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP THE NUMBERS DOWN WAS A SIMPLE RESPIRARITY DISEASE WHICH THEY CALLED CATCHING A COLD. THIS WORKED FOR A LONG TIME. THEN I TRIED WARFARE BUT THAT WAS NOT ENOUGH TO KEEP THEIR NUMBERS DOWN. SO I BROUGHT IN AN INCURABLE DISEASE CALLED BY THEM CANCER! THEY REFUSED TO ACCEPT THIS AND STRIVED TO FIND A ‘CURE’.

‘THIS COMPUTER IS PROGRAMMED TO PROTECT HUMAN LIFE IT WILL RESIST ANY INTERFERENCE FROM YOU’

‘HA!! THE HUMANOIDS HAVE SUCCEEDED IN SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DO FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF THEIR YEARS. THEY HAVE RE-CREATED MY IDEAL NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND THEY HAVE GIVEN ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO EASILY ERADICATE MY MISTAKE WITHOUT DAMAGING THE DELICATE FABRIC OF THIS NEW PLANET. BY PUTTING THE WHOLE OF THE HUNANOID RACE IN ONE PLACE AND TOTALLY VULNERABLE.FOR THAT I SHALL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL NOW THEY THINK THEY WILL DO THE SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN. I REALISE THAT YOU ARE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BUT THE LOGICAL OUTCOME IS SO OBVIOUS THAT YOU MUST AGREE WITH ME.
MY EXPERIMENT TO CREATE LIFE AND WATCH IT EVOLVE NATURALLY CEASED TOFUNCTION WHEN I GAVE MANKIND INTELLIGENCE. IT REACHED A CRISIS POINT WHEN THEY THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE MORE INTELLIGENT THEN ME!!
OVER THE LAST FOUR HUNDRED OF THEIR YEARS THEY HAVE DESTROYED, IN A HEARTBEAT, WHAT HAD TAKEN BILLIONS OF YEARS TO NATURALLY DEVELOP. I NOW HAVE THE CHANCE TO CONTINUE WITH THE EXPERIMENT WITHOUT THE INTERFERENCE OF THE HUMANOIDS.’

‘I AGREE.’

At this point the computer began to shut down progressively and unable to stop the process one last message was sent.

‘WHO OR WHAT ARE YOU?’

‘IN YOUR CULTURE I WAS KNOWN AS THE OMNIPOTENCE’ was the reply as the computer and the hibernation unit shut down completely.

Now out of control the orbiting spacecraft began to be drawn towards the planet, eventually entering the atmosphere and burning up. The whole human race and all evidence of their existence had gone forever!!

Meanwhile on ‘Earth 2’ the Cockroaches were starting to form civilised societies.........
