Cypriots still choose cash over cards – ranking amongst the top three nations in EU for cash use – but cards and other cashless instruments are quickly catching up. The Central Bank of Cyprus’ report on the landscape of retail payments between 2014-2021 found that card transactions more than tripled from €39 million in 2014 to €124 million in 2021. The report also noted that for alternative payments to cash Cypriots clearly favour cards – accounting for 70 per cent of such transactions compared to 52 per cent amongst the rest of the EU. The core message is that Cypriots still rely heavily on cash payments (88 per cent of the volume and 72 per cent of the total value). And the authorities hand in hand with the banks are pushing the CBDC policy as ALL the banks are bankrupt and operating both in insolvency and illegally. If people asked for their money out the banks would have to close doors and force the cbdc the next day, so frankly unless people opt out and to refuse then all your freedoms are gone.
