Customers who refuse to download the apps say they are discriminated against

Smartphones may be pervasive – that extra appendage we never knew needed – but there is a still a significant minority that cannot or do not want to own one.

And they are made to feel increasingly excluded, even when they visit a supermarket.

A supermarket app can now be added to the endless list of what you need your smartphone for, along with banking, socialising, getting around, or booking holidays, with many of Cyprus’ big name supermarket chains introducing their own mobile applications.

In many of these cases, customers who download and use these gain access to exclusive discounts and offers. This in turn provides supermarkets with valuable data on their customers’ consumption habits.

A supermarket knowing your buying habits etc is neither here nor there as it should be localised to them, but we know the data is passed to source we dont want to have such info.

Seeing i am one who neither wants nor needs to be plugged in 24/7 i dont have a problem with shopping apps , i am sure that in part the discounts are funded by sell "marketing data" . For those who are comfortable with every nuance of their existance being available in a database then no problem , but its not for me .

I have a smart phone and have found I can select one item by its QR code at home where I do have internet access and have it scanned at the checkout to get the relevant discount.

Also some supermarkets such as Alphamega offer to log the customer into their internet system so they can use the App 'live' whilst in the store.

There are ways around a problem, but surely progress should mean doing something good for everyone.

I'm sure the so-called 'smart parking' app is going to cause more issues than supermarket apps!
