Decades ago for a snack when i was a kid , i would take marmite , bovril and beef oxo cubes in varying quantities to make a gravy and dip bread in it , guess my big sisters showed me how ! Also at the local swimming pool they seved hot bovril , that must have been late 60s. Mum always used oxo stock cubes whether it be beef, lamb or chicken , was there a pork one ? |

Oh yes the pork one was home made and sublime. in fact once cooled it becomes a fabulous gelatine based food, in Scotland we called it Potted Hock and had small pieces of ham carrot and frankly anything. In Russia its called Haladets. Both equally nice and amazing how so many different cultures have the same uses and products. |

Yes my wife is Estonian, she was brought up in Russian times be hind the iron curtain so there was almost no processed food ! It was all homemade and various meats in jelly was common, she still makes them . Living in Tallinn there was always lots of fish to be had too. This is why she feels homemade food without chemicals is much healthier . It wasnt until there was western influence on food did obesity become a thing . |
