Friends have just been over from the UK. They were last out here in September, and they have had a So Easy sim card for around 2 years. They always keep the Cyprus phone on, even in the UK, but of late they have not been able to use it. So when they came out here they went to the Cyta shop and asked why they couldn't use it, as it wouldn't work in Cyprus either now. They were told that you have to contact Cyta to renew the sim every 12 months, and that they had now lost that number and any money that was left on the phone.

I haven't renewed my So Easy sim card as I wasn't aware I had to.

Anyone throw any light on this?

You have to top up within 12 months of your last top up
(If that makes sense) to keep your number.

They had topped it up within the 12 months. They came over in September and topped it up. I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else who doesn't live in Cyprus but has a Cypriot sim.

If Frank is around maybe he can throw some light on it. You have a Cypriot sim, don't you Cypriot Sid?

This was discussed on CYL a while back - maybe a year ago?

You could re-new your sim card for free and get a better one which held 2 million numbers and also did the washing up (I think that was the promise)

If you didn't re-new, all the plants in your garden would die and you'd have bad luck for ever.

Unfortunately we didn't know about the 'special offer' so we kept our old green sim card and the garden is still ok, although I did have flu at Christmas. ;-)

Oh yes, and the phone still works fine - well it did on Wednesday, hang on ...... fumbles in the drawer .... yep, it still works.

:-)

Hi

Have had a look on CYTA's website. On the terms and conditions it does state that the initial card that is purchased with the new phone number is only valid for 3 months, after that you will not be able to use that number or sim card.

If you purchase one of the normal top up cards and activate it, it is valid for a period of 12 months before they expire and you loose your number.

Maybe what they say and what they do are different!

I got a so-easy card from a kiosk when we got here & its still working fine :? I hope it doesn't go off, as its my business number & I'd be lost without it or the numbers on it, I think I'll transfer them all to the phone right away, just incase

Hi Verity

We have a so easy sim card and have never renewed it as sim card is white.

Is that providing your sim card is white & have CytaVodamenu as one of the menu options there is no need to change your sim cards.

This applied to Cytanet sim cards too.

It needs to be compatable to Vodaphone network basically

I guess this is why ours is still working and we keep it topped up before we leave to return to uk.My own one in uk was not used for few months and i lost credit also number.

Our cyprus mobiles are fine after 5 years.

frank :D

ps congratulations on being moderator :D :D

Thanks guys. I remember something about SIM card colour, now that you mention it. That has solved a mystery.

The SoEasy autooperator will tell you how much credit there is on your SIM card and when it expires. It will stop making calls at that date. There is then, I believe, another 90 days before the card is switched off and the number lost, during which time you should be able to receive calls.

If there is credit on the card, don't update it until the due date as the revised credit period starts from the date you update the credit and is not added to the end. A £5 card (or whatever it now costs in Euros) lasts for 12 months.
