Post subject: | starting a ice cream van and donut stall in paphos |
Hi all We would love to start a business in paphos , running an ice cream van around paphos, also would love to start our dinky donut on the harbour front. Can we ask you if you know about there laws on starting up or do you have any links that might help us?? or do you know who to contact about starting up in this trade. We would love to move out there but could not sit around all day doing nothing at all <would> We have a villa about 25 mins drive away from paphos. If anyone could help with this information we would really appreciate it as we would like to start in april this year, so really need to start thinking about shipping trailer out with the ice cream van. Also do you think it will work for us to do this in paphos to make a living. I never seen a soft ice cream van around paphos area so there might be scope to go around to work place selling ice cream ,what do you think. Any advice good or bad please Thank You Mark |

Hi Mark Welcome to the forum and sure you will get a reply soon to your question. There is an ice cream van that does it's rounds near us at Univeersal called "Rambo's but like most businesses they are very territorial. From past posts on this subject this is what comes across. frank |

Hi Frank Do you think it would end up fighting each other, as i would not want this? All we want to do is make an honest living without upsetting anyone. Thanks for your reply |

I love the donut idea We're in Peyia and we have an ice cream van that comes round in summer. There are quite a few ice cream stands along the harbour just now, so don't know if they'd take too kindly to an icecream stand - but I definitely haven't seen donuts. Crepes yes, donuts no. I think with a business like that you might be best getting in contact with the CTO (Cyprus tourist office) as they may know the rules and licencing requirments. Good luck - and remember and tell me when the donuts are here!! I can actually smell fresh donuts - used to buy a bag of fresh mini donuts when I went my jollies to Blackpool with my nanna! P. |

I can't help you on the laws regardess but what I can say is, I've seen a couple of ice-creams vans around but as nearly all the kiosks sell ice-cream down at the harbour & around town, then there's not much call for it, apart from maybe in the villages but then if they have a shop or kiosk, they probably sell it too As for the dinky donuts, I can honestl say, I've not seen anyone selling these in paphos but thats not to say they don't somewhere but its always a good idea, as competition is always good for people, unless a Cypriot does it first Good luck in both your ventures & in your move over, I hope you're able to do what it is your dream of & hopefully we'll see you over here soon |

Ummmm might have to give up the ice cream idea then? as we do not want to step on any toes. I have to look into selling dinky donuts from our trailer if we are allowed that is. I am sure this would be a great seller in the summer MTh's. |

Hi Mark I think the norm here is you have an idea and it takes off you will have a lot of entrepeneurs following if you know what i mean. frank |

Dose the cypriot people like us brits coming over and working, or do they get annoyed with us. Must say though i have met lots off cypriot people and they all been very kind and helpful people to us, but i am sure some off you could tell a different story. |

I reckon donuts (or should it be doughnuts?) are definitely worth a try round the Paphos area - I can think of at least a couple of regular customers! |

I can't help about the setting up business questions but agree that there are a lot of ice cream sellers and there are mobile softee types (there's usually a couple at Tomb of the Kings entrance). Donuts, now you're talking, I really miss the warm, slightly crisp, sugary mmmmmmmm!!!!! Sorry phased out for a minute there.... if you get them going I will be one of your first customers with David hot on my tail! Only advice is do LOADSA research, check all legalities and then Go 4 It, nothing ventured etc etc All the best !!!!! |

I am going to ring the tourist office tomorrow and try and get a donut or should it be doughnuts in paphos . But one thing was worrying me i was just reading some post about you all on a diet and lost all this weight and eating good food. But i am sure once you smell them donuts or should it be doughnuts you will not resist it and buy some. |

Well, if they don't approve, they just usually just bomb your car. |

You need a license to trade on the harbour. you need to speak with the municipality . all them people that are doing the pictures, braiding the hair etc, have permits. I think with it being food you may need anther permit from there HSE .. Dept .. |

Hi Mark Like any ‘new’ business it takes Time & Money to set-up, and over here it WILL take you double the time if you do it the ‘right way’. Trust me – you do need to be 110% correct from the start. I think you have a great idea and both will work OK! There are a couple of ice cream vans about, and I don’t think you will have a problem if you don’t turn up on the same street at the same time (or close to it)… There are a LOT of Fate’s, Car boot/markets, and outdoor events especially in the summer months that you could attend. There is also a big market on the SBA’s (English Military Bases) that you could tap into --- I maybe able to help you with that as we work a LOT on all the camps. Drop me an email and I’ll put you in touch with a good accountant, as you WILL need to set-up a company. GOOD LUCK |

I think mini donuts on timi market could work.... I dont know how much shipping would cost you to have your pre-mix sent over .. ? |

Neil I think Timi market would look like a battle field of donuts as there is a Van (cypriot) selling them- mind you they are not mini ones if thats a help. Bob |

Last time we were in Protaras we used a bog standard ice cream van parked above Fig Tree Bay daily. The ice creams were delicious and cheap and he did a roaring trade I mean he was very busy. Don't know whether there is one at the Harbour or Coral Bay but me thinks if there was it would do great business. Good Luck, Gary |

Hi Gary My ice cream van is only 3 yrs old and looks like brand new, so i would have thought people would come to us as it looks very clean and smart. We coming over next week to have a look around paphos area to see what we are up against? and to see if there would be any chance off having a round in paphos if not then it donuts all the way yum yum |
