Post subject:  A (long) Day in Egypt .

As requested by Pete ,

It's a long day , early start between 6-00 & 6-30 for the trip to Paphos airport .

Being an organised trip formalities are over quickly and it's onto the plane ,
breakfast is provide , not a full English sadly but enough to get you started .

On landing in Cairo you go through a set gate and hand in your passport ,
this gets delivered later , you find your bus and away you go.

The guide gives you the itinarary for the day , in our case , Mohammed Ali
Mosque , Cairo Museum , Pyramids , Meal , shopping and finally the evening Nile
Cruise . As we went in Oct it happened to be Ramadan so that changed the meal time,
normally it would have been before the Pyramid stop.

The traffic in Cairo is manic , every one seems to want the bit of road someone else is
using , this was no problem for us , not only did we have smartly suited , ARMED security
gaurd on the bus , but a chase car with about five police in it , there were actually two bus's
on our tour , the chase car would pass up the outside going into a roundabout and block
traffic to let the bus's straight out .

We arrived safely at the Mosque and were ushered through gate with armed gaurds
checking the groups in , there are a lot of trips running at the same time and to the same
places so it is pretty busy .

The Mosque is a marvellous building , hopefully the pic's give an idea of the place .When you go
it's shoes off , and fetching green gowns for the ladies to cover arms , legs and shoulders , you
can just make these out in the pic's. You get a chat about the Muslim religion and it's ways and
then a chance to wander , again I hope the Pic's convey something of the splendour of the inside .

Here are a couple of shots of the view over Cairo , I asked the guide if ti was always this hazy ,
and yes it is , the heat and pollution just keep it like a blanket of grime . Apparantly if it was clear
you could see the Pyramids from here .

Sorry this should be further down . This is a veiw of Cairo from the Giza site , and I thought the pyramids were out in the dessert.

Then it's off to the museum , this is in a very cramped area and again there is a scrum of bus's
trying to get in and out , the bus drops you and then go's and parks and comes back at the arranged
time . This is VERY important .

No cameras in the museum , loads of tour parties , lots of noise as each guide trys to tell you about
the various exhibits , I suffer with Tinitus and a high pitch hearing problen so gave up trying to hear what
was being said , we just looked at stuff as we went round kepping an eye on the group so as not to get left
behind . An hour is no way enough to see all that is there , a week would do it if you really wanted to get
the history . You get the chance to go into the set aside area with all of the Two-ton-car-moon exhibits ,
this is just breath taking , artifacts of solid gold , necklaces and bracelets covered in jewels , I just cannot
put it into words what you see, the death mask of Tuts is solid gold and weighs 22 Kilos , the solid gold inner
coffin that held the mummy weighs 110 Kilos . These alone must be worth millions , apparently the Egyptians
used gold as mere decoration , they actully valued silver higher . Some of the party paid extra and went into the
mummy room , we went out and had a smoke and waited to be gathered up for the next leg .

Back on the bus and , oh dear , two people missing , hurried search , no sign , bus has to go , and it did ,
off to Giza , like probably most people I've seen the Pyramids loads of times on telly , I have some photo's
that my Dad took when he was there in 1939 during the war , but this does not prepare you for the sheer size
of these things , again I cant find the words to describe these , amazing , a feat of engineering brilliance , how did
they do it 4000 years ago . Qouting from a book I bought , some years ago they measured the accuracy of the
pyramid of Khufu , the sides are 230 meters and a few centimeters , the the total difference in the sides is ,

20 Cm. Not bad really .probably better than some of todays builders .

Okay , on to the visit , beware , scoundrels and hawkers are rife , they will try and steal your camera , they will
engage you in conversation and dress you up and take your pictue and then you pay for the privalidge , even the
police get in on the act , take a picture with you , then rub the finger & thumb gesture , with a smile of course .
How do I know this , it happened to us . See the pic's .

Apparantly people come from all over the world to marvel at this sight , not that you could tell .

Oh it was here that the lost two reappeard , they misheard the bus leaving time , were found and bundled into
a taxi and sent off across Cairo , thay thought they were being kidnapped as the driver did'nt speak English .

After this it was off to the hotel for food , not any hotel , a top list 5* job , all white coats and silver cutlary , and
with a view of the of the Pyramids too . Food was okay too .

Next was the shopping trip , though TRAP would be more like it , during the bus rides between sites the guide tells you
what is involved in the shopping stop , a Papyrus makers and jewelary shop , if you like to look at these leaflets you can
choose a necklace with hiro / hyroglyf , oh , them picture things on it .

Order now collect later , to good a chance for my SO , more of this later . When you get there you are shown down to the
paper shop , then the door is locked , a demo on how it's made and then browse the pretty pictures , personnal shopper included ,
this one hovered on your shoulder , you only had to look at something and you were asked if you wanted it , we even waited till he
was looking the other way and snuck off to the other end of the shop , twenty seconds and he was back .

After this upstairs to the jewelary shop, SO go's and gets the necklace and then we realise we missed some of the chat on the bus ,
when you order the necklace thay ask your name obviously , my good lady gives her surname and thinks no more of it , what she
SHOULD have done is give her first name , thats what they put on the the necklace , so she is now the proud owner of a necklace
with the name Cox in pretty pictures .

Oh and just to make a good killing from the gullible , the chain is extra .

It was good to escape back to the bus , another drive through Cairo and down to the Nile , all aboard the boat for the trip down the river ,
The trip lasts about two hours , food and entertainment , this was good , a nice belly dancer , and then some music , we went up top
and watched the lights of the City slide by along with a lot of others . This was probably the best way to see it , you dont see the poverty ,
the unfinished buildings , or the kids playing in the garbage .

After this back to the airport and the flight back , we got back to the hotel around 12-00pm . so it is a long day , did I enjoy it , yes , would I go
back , no , I cannot work out a a country that was so developed and advanced 4000 years ago can be like it is now , great wealth in areas and
total poverty in others .

A few pic's to illustrate the poor side .

Well I hope you are still here , sorry it was so long winded I could have gone on some more , but I hope this gives an insight from an average persons view .

Another apology for the formatting , I typed it up in wordpad
and pasted it , I started this yesterday and halfway through I managed t o lose the lot .

Thats awesome, thanks for this, it really does give you an insight into another world, not sure I'd like to go myself as I don't do buses & boats, but the missus might fancy it with her friends sometime

Thanks again Mike :D

We had customers who went last year and loved it. However they didnt enjoy being herded around by police and soldiers, hurried everywhere, harrased by vendors and touts but overall loved the experience.

we did the trip a couple of times as we felt like it was over very quick and we didn't have time to take it in. I is really weird Sphinx and Pyramids as you say just there with yes the McDonalds what a place to put one (is no-where sacred) I went inside one I must say it's not for the faint hearted hundreds of steps or it felt like hundred's all going down hill in a very confined space with people coming back up sweating to death, folks deciding they had made the wrong decision and not knowing whether to go up or down or try to turn around and put your foot in somebodies face in the attempt. i laugh now thinking of it but at the time it was a bit scary. Cairo total mania goats on roofs, the poor are really poor maybe they have to hide them up there, kids with fingers and one with a leg missing a man with no legs at all sitting on the floor with a stampede of tourists heading is way!! We couldn't believe what we were seeing, thats why we had to do it again just to make sure it wasn't a bad dream (kidding) very bizzare excuse the pun, I just wanted to put the sprinklers on in the museum to get rid of everyone so I could actually see what I had come all that way to look at the boy King and his treasures WOW.. I'll stop now culture shock or what!! Loved it

That made an interesting read but don't think i could do it after being in middle east all those years.

Looks as though progression in some areas is really slow.

Those pictures bring back memories of when we did the trip a few years ago. I'm glad we went and it was a great experience to see the pyramids and sphinx but a big surprise to see that they are no longer in the middle of knowhere like you imagine. Because over the years Cairo has grown so much, they are now just on the edge of town. I agree that all the touts do spoil the experience a bit by mithering you constantly to buy their wares. A policeman offered to take a picture of us then held his hand out for money - needless to say he didn't get a thing !

I like to think I'm pretty thick but I would urge anyone else out there who thinks they may find Egypt boring or too much effort on the brain to do it.
I mean you will see things built in the same year Newcastle last won a meaningful trophy. How old is that.
Seriously folks, do visit if you can. Photos can not do justice to the Pyramids or the slums you will see, which have had just as big an effect on us.
We loved it, we loved the Egyptian Museum and of course Tuts gear. We visited in July so it was hot hot hot.( Especially the museum)
We did things to a different time table ie Pyramids first, cos of the heat, but the beggars and hawkers weren't too bad. Less hassle than Turkey !

I also have have done this trip in 2005 and can say with all honestly that it was well worth it. The Sphinx and the pyramids are awesome (even though I bottled out of going inside one after a few steps inside). I too bought a Cartouche, thank god with my forename name on, really made me laugh the lady who has her surname "Cox" on hers.

We also visted one of the Bazaars where we could practice our haggling skills, it was so funny! Everything was cheaper than "Asda price"!

The highlight for me was Cairo museum and to see King Tuts mask and the mummy room.

Well worth the visit I'd say. A truly memorable experience.

I fully endorse others comments , it is worth doing , it will be a lasting memory , but it's hard to shut your eyes to the poverty that is all around , especialy in the edges of the City . The biggest problem is the way you are seen as 'prey' by the locals , thay took the edge of of the day for me .

But I still have no regrets about going . :)

Thanks to all for the interest , that lot took about two hours to put together , LOTS of editing spelling and still missed some . :o

CF, if and when you do go , my recomendation from our trip would be to try and be in a larger group tham two , I think this would make it more difficultt to get 'caught' by the vedors and touts and general schemers , the more of you there are the easier it would be to ignore them or just walk on past , two of you are easy to bring to a halt . Just my thoughts given our experiance .

Seems like sound advice - maybe we should go mob-handed with a group from Paphos People - will have to get social secretary Verity on the case when she's back in action!

Molly,
I say go for it. When we did it there was a really friendly atmosphere on the coach. It started in Cairo airport when we all sort of started looking after each other and by the time we went for lunch all the people sitting at the back of the bus were on really friendly terms and it continued throughout the day.
On the Nile boat there were about 25 of us sat in a cirlcle drinking together and some of the people were on their own but were joining in.
From my experience I wouldn't worry about doing it alone, in fact our daughter did it on her own and said she found everyone friendly as well.

On a serious note, the firm who run these trips from Paphos to Cairo are called AEOLOS. I was given the number a couple of years ago and got the trip at a reduced price( a lot cheaper than the tour operators) but I did have a contact's name to quote.
If there were a group of you from PP wanting to go I dare say you could get a very good price.
You could maybe refer to this if the trip is ever organised. The number I rang was 26 944 822 and ask for Xemos.
Remember, Alexander The Great, Julius Caesar and Napoleon marched their armies to look at the pyramids. If it's good enough for them.........

Hi Molly

I also did this trip on my own and met some lovely people.

Wouldn't hesitate doing a trip on my own again, in fact much cheaper without the kids!

i worked for a tourist shop a couple of years ago and was lucky enough to do both the cruise and the flight to Egypt, and i would say that the flight is the best one to go for, mainly as there is a 2 or 2.5 hour drive from the port to Cairo and with the flight you are flown directly there of course so that is more time spent in Egypt. I loved it there, yes it was busy, hectic, frantic etc but at the same time you just accept it as its so unreal being there, somewhere you have seen on the telly so many times and you can't explain the feeling of seeing it for real, i for one would say go for it, it is expensive but so, so worth it.
One tip, just don't make eye contact with any of the locals trying to sell you anything and they won't bother you, just ignore them to the best of your ability there is always someone else they can go to.
I have a cartouche (can't spell it) and i love it, i didn;t buy the chain there put it on my own chain (which keeps on breaking!) just something to remember my trip by (any my birthday prezzie).
I would NOT recommend going into the pyramid if you are offered the chance, spend the time exploring outside the pyramids, it was so hot even in Nov when i went, lots of peeps fainting its a long hard slog to get up uneven and slippery steps for not much inside, i did it so i could inform any customers of my experience, and regretted it.
Anyhoo thats my account.
Thx
Amanda

Thanks Amanda,

That's good to know, I think I would have to fly over, as I don't do boats due to turning green at the gills

But as I use to like to do a bit of caving & potholing in my past, I'd want to go inside, no matter how hot it was, can't be any worse that 200m below ground crawling through holes no bigger than a large dog flap, half filled with water, except a lot hotter  plus I'm too nosey not to go inside :D

My friend works for Olympic - she may be able to give me an idea of the cost to fly.

Pyramid is great fun but not if your claustrophobic. Nothing to see inside though.

If you get time - PLEASE do not miss the Sun Boat museum - situated beside the Great Pyramid. It's absolutely fabulous and was found pretty much intact in a great pit by the side of the pyramid.

Just found out - Olympic holidays do their trip on Fridays and cost is either Cy£210 or 220pp, which includes everything.
