Post subject:  Paphos Sea Front

I took a stroll down the sea front last night 9.00pm
There was a gap in the barrier, so I had a walk up the front.
Boy there is so much space along that sea front now
its unbelieveable , now that have chopped all them shops back.
I dont know what is going to happen with them, but I am sure the shop owners will want to come back out onto the street again.
I have to admit, I think it will look good when its done..
All we need to do now is get the tourists back .. :D

I would how many of the shop owners have now gone bankrupt, due to loss of business.

I shouldnt imagine too many of the shopkeepers have been greatly disadvantaged financially, as the winter/early months just kepp them ticking along, and main incomes come later in the year. Long term the businesses will benefit from the infrastructure improvements, and I would suggest any great losses will possibly be put right by the authorities.

Am I correct in saying the bulk of the shops keept trading up until very recently?

I think they made an aggrement, that they all closed last week..

Apparently there is going to be a meeting next week to discuss with shopkeepers the design of the pergolas/verandas to go in front of the shops. A single style throughout will certainly be better than the hotch potch of styles that they had before. Presumably they will all have a common footpath design too. That still leaves a hell of a wide road that will end up as a car park :)

The shopkeepers will apparently have to pay rent on the premises that are closed. Presumably if they want to keep staff they will have to pay them too? Many are taking the opportunity to refurbish premises, some of which were already refurbished in the last two years. Compensation (or lack of it) has been a bone of contention.

Good news is that the work is already two months ahead of schedule.

All but one of the shops (below) have been closed for about two weeks, and many were closed soon after the work started in November.

That comment pleases me.

PS

I'd love to know where and how you get your info KG., because the local traders and shopkeepers tell US nothing.
Is that because we are British?

Most of my information comes from Cyprus TV news and from talking to people.

I was however mistaken about the meeting about the verandas. It appears to have already taken place this week. From what I can gather from last night's news, the verandas will be made of steel and glass. The artist's impression shown on TV was rather uninspiring - I would have preferred a more traditional design using stone and wood, but the finished result may look a lot better.

Genesis is on Ikarou Street, near the Post Office in Kato Paphos, right next door to the Rugby Arms. I don't know why, but it didn't seem to attract many customers, maybe the location, who knows?? There are some holiday apartments close by, the Apollonia, and the Pagona, but it's also a short walk from either the front and Bar Street, or in the other direction, the road where all the restaurants are (Almond Tree etc).

The estate agent I work for had the Genesis on their website for sale but I received an email this week saying it was no longer available. Unfortunately they didn't elaborate, just withdrew it so have to assume it was sold.

Took a walk down the sea front last Sunday and I have to say I was impessed, it is slowly taking shape and you can with imagination gain some idea on how it will look, I really think it will be finished for May or nearly there.

One solitary shop open for papers but all other shops closed. Sea was high and coming over sea wall but I think not all of the sea defenses are in place yet if they get this right it will be good.

Sorry to say but unless Cyprus in general doesn't drop its prices, it doesn't matter how much they spend on doing the place up, it won't bring back the tourists

Drove down Ikarou this morning to the Post Office (Mothers Day card to post), and passed Genesis. It's got a big banner up, saying they're opening 1st March, so looks like they've been sold. I hope it does well for them, as the last couple of owners haven't had a lot of luck with it.

The Chinese " specialists " flying into Paphos to lay the "gra-night" on Posedonios Ave. have been delayed until next week.

* gra-night = granite.

Lucy Robson's pronounciation is much to be desired.

Ayios Antonious street, which is pedestrianised, will be open to traffic to help ease congestion while the works are going on.................

Pedestrian Road to Open

The arrival of a team of Chinese specialists flying in for upgrade works in Paphos harbour has been delayed, but, they should be arriving next week as deadline for completion draws nearer.

The workers are being brought in under special contract owing to their expertise in working with granite.

In the meantime, the authorities say they will soon open pedestrianised Ayios Antoniou to traffic to ease congestion while the Kato Paphos works continue.

I am led to believe that Genesis may be run by Cypriuots - a friend who lives round the corner from there had a look at the menu this morning on her way past, and says it all seems to be Cypriot style food.

Never very busy though but maybe as owners not management driven type is why it closed down.
