Just a word of warning regarding anyone taking a Japanese spec (not export) car back to the UK, make sure that it has the Japanese de-registration certificate and has been SVA tested along with proof of Tax/duty paid.
it can be and is very difficult as well as expensive to get an SVA approval in the UK, the emissions test alone if you need one is £750+Vat so be warned.
If your car is purely for the Jap market a new speedo facia (dial) is required in MPH, these are not available from the manufacturer ans cost around £200 for a one off.
Fog lights are required as well as side blinkers all of which add up the cost as I'm finding out for the Toyots Spacio that I brought back from Cyprus.

I checked with the dealer in Limassol before I left and he quite wrongly assured me that all would be OK as Cyprus is now in the EEC.

I finaly got my Car back from the Import company who specialise in Japanese imports and the SVA Test.
It took 9 weeks, the de-registration certificate had to be obtained via this companys contacts in Japan.

UK DVLA do not recognise any form of testing that takes place in Cyprus even though it is a EU Country, the Cyprus SVA test is worthless.

The cost to get my car through the SVA test, MOT, DVLA spot check, Register vehicle, Road fund license, number plates, use of an existing test report, fog lights fitted was £1429 GBP

Speedometre facia (to include MPH as wellas KPH) £217.

Insurance quotes are high and if involved in an accident you only get a courtesy car after parts have been acquired as they are often difficult ot obtain.

One avenue that could be pursued is that if you owned the car for 6 months before going to the UK it could well be easier or so the importers told me.
