noticed a few cars the other day when travelling on the motorway, with number plates having a white background and red greek letters and numbers etc. are these diplomatic plates or just cars that havent been registered yet?

These are trade plates and means car has not been registered yet. Not sure why they are given to customers as only takes 10mins at road transport to get car registered. May be a payment issue with supplier . There are a few Ford's that never found there cyprus plates so be ware .

Simon

Could it be that whilst there are branches in the main towns, the Head offices of the car importers are invariably in Nicosia and that all information is fed to them to get new sales registered "at the end of the week" in one go?

Just a thought.

That could be an answer Bianca but we see cars here for a prolonged period on these plates sometimes. Could it be the garages using them or potential buyers on approval tests.....

They look like a trade plate so the car sales family car drive the cars for a while prior to selling them as new.
dokimi is what it roughly says, rough translation is test or try out.

Are people expected to change from the 'yellow' to 'white' backed plates in a certain timeframe, or by a specific date?

Topgun I forget the exact details but it is some thing like this.
z plates, t plates, vans and trucks ( commercial) motorcycles, quad bikes, all had a limited period to conform to new regs, this has long since past.
general private saloons you can stay with what you have, if you have to replace plates due to damage then only new types are available
I beleive this infomation to be about right.
